AMANDA MCMILLAN ’08 Herminie, Pa. MAJOR: Politics ACCOMPLISHMENT: Awarded the Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, an honor presented to select students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment “Through the encouragement of Dr. Joe Sheldon and persistent work on the Udall Award application, I have been able to solidify my vocational calling to environmentally based community development. . . . I firmly believe that a healthy relationship between people and their land leads to improved local environmental conditions and an increased sense of place for individuals within that community.” Senior art majors and biology students worked together last fall, conducting research on the Yellow Breeches Creek, analyzing data, and presenting images in the “Breeching Boundaries” exhibit, which was an experimental project synthesizing aesthetics and science. provides quality music experiences to students from the Central Pennsylvania region, including both instrumental and vocal lessons, as well as performance opportunities. Along with a number of faculty members, music education majors also teach lessons to young musicians, gaining valuable teaching experience prior to student teaching. Another collaborative arts effort, “Breeching Boundaries,” was launched during the fall of 2006. It featured an innovative partnership between the Department of Visual Arts and the Department of Biological Sciences. Faculty and students from these departments worked together to synthesize and artistically present a special project examining the role and function of the Yellow Breeches in the Messiah College community. The project was directed by Pete Richards, senior artist for San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the nation’s foremost museum in the areas of science, art, and human perception. Christine Forsythe, chair of the Department of Visual Arts, says, “This project made this group of students rethink how they worked, what they were going to do in their senior art show, and gave them a new respect for their environment and their peers.” In addition to numerous plays, including an innovative modernization of Romeo and Juliet in which the young lovers’ star-crossed communication happened in part by way of cell phones, the Department of Theatre presented The Talisman in collaboration with Touchstone Theatre of Bethlehem, Pa. Featuring the life of the legendary storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, the performance included Messiah student actors and a Touchstone actor and was guest directed by Bill George of Touchstone. George was very happy with the results of the cooperative effort, saying, “I am a director who loves actors, especially young actors who have the courage, the temerity, to strike out into the field of theatre.
