Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 19) education of distinction The spring 2007 season boasted its own champions, with the women’s track and field team capturing the MAC Championship and the men’s tennis team winning the Commonwealth Conference Championship. Garnering recognition for more than their athletic prowess and commitment to scholarship, Messiah men’s and women’s athletics programs also were recognized by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Student Athlete Advisory Committee with the Commonwealth Conference Sportsmanship Awards for 2007. For Messiah College athletes, faith informs the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. Jerry Chaplin, director of athletics, describes Messiah athletes as “focused on representing Christ, the Messiah whose name they wear on their uniforms . . . as they compete and interact with an opponent.” Representing this strong character, Stevie Baum ’10, a member of the women’s track and field team, received the “Giant Steps Award,” which is presented by the MASCAC to an athlete who has overcome significant obstacles to compete at the college level. which is awarded by the Boy Scouts of America. For six years, Stone, an Eagle Scout, worked to coordinate the planting of over 2,000 trees at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. He also established baseline water quality data for the Blackwater River Watershed. Stone, who is majoring in biology, is one of only 1,100 citizens to receive the Hornaday medal since 1914. “I am far from finished with my conservation work,” says Stone. “Looking back at what I’ve done has spurred me on and excited me for the future.” In January 2008, Stone hopes to assist Professor Erik Lindquist with research on canopy amphibians in the cloud forests of Panama. Stone’s efforts on behalf of the planet exemplify Messiah College’s own commitment to environmental stewardship. In the past year, “green” campus initiatives have included planting an on-campus communitysupported garden and attaining the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for The Bridge magazine’s publication process, which promotes responsible forest management in all foresting, milling, and manufacturing procedures used to publish the magazine. Additionally, Messiah received the 2006 Green Power: Turn It On! Award from Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (Penn Future), which recognized the College’s commitment to purchasing 4.5 percent of its electricity from wind power. Furthermore, Messiah College faculty member Joseph Sheldon, distinguished professor of biology and environmental science, is at the forefront of national environmental efforts. Earlier this year, Sheldon joined a historic environmental coalition of scientists and religious leaders, which issued “An Urgent Call to Action,” a joint statement at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., that articulated concerns about human-caused threats to the environment. CHRISTOPHER COLIN ’08 Bowie, Md. MAJORS: Politics and Spanish ACCOMPLISHMENT: Elected student body president “For me, the most meaningful aspect of being the Student Government Association (S.G.A.) president is serving as the sole representative of the students to the Messiah College administration. . . . As the student body president, I feel I can provide as much creativity, excitement, and perseverance as is needed to lead the influential S.G.A. cabinet into the next year. . . . The single most dominant factor that influenced me to run for S.G.A. president was my love for politics and the joy of forming policies that help the lives of people that they affect.” Boy Scouts of America awards Joshua Stone ’10 national medal Student’s efforts reflect Messiah College’s own commitment to environmental stewardship In January, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne presented Joshua Stone ’10 with the William T. Hornaday Silver Medal for distinguished service in conservation, “I am far from finished with my conservation work. Looking back at what I’ve done has spurred me on and excited me for the future.” — Joshua Stone ’10, on his ongoing work to benefit the environment 19 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/politics/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/modern/ http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/track/ http://www.messiah.edu/org/sga/ http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/mens_tennis/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/fsc/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/StevieBuamgivenGiantStepsAward.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/fsc/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/creation_care/creation_care2.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/creation_care/creation_care2.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/creation_care/sheldon.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/winter07/creation_care/sheldon.html
