President Phipps announces new financial aid initiative Opening Doors to Educational Opportunities seeks to raise $20 million to help students offset costs Last fall, President Kim Phipps announced a new financial aid initiative, Opening Doors for Educational Opportunities, which will help students pursue Messiah College’s high-quality Christian education and avoid college-related debt. The initiative seeks to raise $20 million over the next five years in combined endowed funds and annual gifts. “This effort, when completed, will more than double the current amount of endowed scholarship funds avail- the ultimate factor Melissa Driver ’07 (right) and Corinna Hess ’09 clear fallen branches at the Joshua Farm in Harrisburg, an urban garden which provides vocational and service opportunities for at-risk youth through collectively-grown Community Supported Agriculture. Currently, 97 percent of all Messiah students receive some type of institutional financial aid. The College awarded $20 million of institutional financial aid during the 2006–2007 academic year alone. Despite the College’s significant financial commitments to its students, many prospective students still face unmet need that exceeds their families’ resources. Often, financial aid support is the ultimate factor that determines whether or not a student is able to enroll at Messiah College. Through the Opening Doors initiative, the College also hopes to enable students who desire to work in full-time ministry, missions, and service careers to do so free of the burden of large debt loads. Messiah College is committed to recruiting and retaining all qualified students regardless of their financial need. To meet this challenge, the College is asking alumni and friends of the institution to consider gifts toward student financial aid and, specifically, to consider endowed scholarship support.
