Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 21) LIZ CHMIELEWSKI ’07 Woodbine, Md. MAJOR: Biology ACCOMPLISHMENT: Serving with SALT (Serving and Learning Together) Program through Mennonite Central Committee, teaching English at a nursing school in India “My experiences at Messiah provided me with the opportunity to think deeply about the world and the meaning of being a Christian. I realize that God is calling us to a lifestyle of service and justice. Messiah allowed me to building meaningful relationships with other students and faculty that helped me to grow in my faith and mature as a person. I’m so thankful for the friendships I made, the new perspectives I gained, and the changes that occurred in my life as the result of my time there.” This team with matching T-shirts and capes was one of many who, through sponsor pledges, raised more than $40,000 at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event on campus in May. From 8 p.m. on May 4 until 8 a.m. on May 5, students, employees, and friends walked the track at Starry Field, both celebrating survivors of cancer and raising funds to support cancer research. The event was held in honor of the late Messiah College president Rodney J. Sawatsky (inset). Messiah’s inaugural Relay for Life raises $40,000 for cancer research Over 400 students, employees, and friends participate in all-night event in honor of Rodney J. Sawatsky Messiah College hosted its first Relay for Life, May 4–5, 2007. Organized by students, the event raised more than $40,000 for the American Cancer Society in honor of late Messiah College president Rodney J. Sawatsky, who died of a cancerous brain tumor in 2004. “We far surpassed our goals to not only raise money for cancer research but also to establish a funfilled service event to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those surviving cancer,” says Jennifer Myhre ’08, who led the event’s organization. Myhre, who looks forward to making Relay for Life a tradition at the College, partnered with Messiah College alumna and American Cancer Society employee Nicole (D’Aquino) Crist ’04 to plan the event. “Without fundraisers such as Relay for Life,” says Crist, “we could not continue to provide research, education, advocacy, and services that support and fight for those with cancer.” 21 http://www.messiah.edu/community/connection/pdf/fall05.pdf http://www.messiah.edu/departments/bioscience/ http://www.messiah.edu/community/connection/pdf/fall05.pdf http://www.messiah.edu/community/connection/pdf/fall05.pdf
