BOYER EDUCATION AWARD The story behind the scholarship: The Ernest L. Boyer Education Award is given to students who are planning careers as teachers and who have the potential to develop the characteristics that Ernest L. Boyer believed essential for good teaching, including knowledge of their subjects, knowledge of children and their growth and development, knowledge of how students learn, and personal characteristics of openness and authenticity. Kristine (Harvey) Frey ’06, an English education major who won the award in 2006–2007, describes herself as “humbled to receive a scholarship in the name of such a distinguished educational reformer as Dr. Boyer.
