arigorous Messiah ranks ninth in nation for study abroad “Open Doors 2006” report affirms the College’s commitment to cross-cultural education The Institute of International Education’s “Open Doors 2006” report ranked Messiah College ninth among U.S. baccalaureate institutions for the number of students studying abroad. During the 2005–2006 academic year, 444 Messiah students participated in credit-bearing international programs in locations such as England, Egypt, Uganda, Japan, and Russia. Messiah offers students 30 programs in 40 countries, including international cross-cultural courses, semester-long international studies, and academic service-learning experiences. Wendy Lippert, director of Messiah’s EpiCenter (Experiential Programs Information Center), which during 2006–2007 helped 429 students secure educational opportunities abroad, says the ranking reflects the College’s commitment to prepare students “to think, live, and serve as global citizens.” Other mid-state institutions included in the top 20 were Dickinson College and Bucknell University, ranked thirteenth and nineteenth, respectively. Calvin College ranked fourth. Messiah College has consistently ranked in the top 20 baccalaureate institutions for total number of students studying abroad since 1999. The report indicated an eight percent increase over the previous year’s report in total number of American students studying abroad and reflected growing interest in non-traditional destinations as well as non-Englishspeaking countries.
