Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 7) education of distinction Nursing students achieve 100 percent pass rate on state board exam Messiah College is one of only three nursing programs in the state to earn this distinction Messiah nursing students scored a perfect pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) between October 2005 and September 2006. The report of the State Board of Nursing of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the examination year 2005–2006 revealed that Messiah College was one of only three nursing programs whose students all passed the test. The exam tests current medical knowledge and nursing skills and determines a candidate’s eligibility to begin work as a licensed registered nurse. While the Messiah College nursing program has scored a perfect pass rate in the past, this is the first time the Department of Nursing received a letter of commendation from the state board. Christopher Mikaya ’06, a nursing alumnus who works in the neurosurgical intensive care unit at Hershey Medical Center, describes the NCLEX-RN as the most difficult test he has ever taken, one that crams four years of knowledge into a six-hour-long test. He says, “I’m very pleased and proud to be part of a class that had 100 percent for the pass rate on a first attempt. Nursing is a very challenging and difficult major and career choice. . . . The Messiah College experience prepared me better than almost any school in the country would have.” KAI KASIGURAN ’08 Oakwood Village, Ohio MAJOR: Accounting ACCOMPLISHMENT: All-American soccer player, Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, and member of Messiah College’s national championship soccer team “Being a part of the team and program these past three years has been a significant factor in shaping me into who I am today. Why participate in college athletics in spite of a substantial academic load? It’s not just for the love of the game, although I do love the game. In addition to the memories, experiences, and growth in so many areas, Messiah soccer helps the College provide a holistic education, an education that readies me to go into the world and impact it, through academic knowledge partnered with an ability to work as part of a team. Perhaps most significantly, Messiah soccer has taught me to discipline myself towards excellence.” Messiah College awarded $200,000 NEH Grant Funds will permanently endow Center for Public Humanities and support its programs In December, Messiah College’s Center for Public Humanities was selected to receive the $200,000 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant. The nationally competitive award will permanently endow the Center which seeks to bring together various groups interested in humanities-based education, cultural events, and civic issues of contemporary significance. “This grant is a strong affirmation that our vision of public humanities is on the cutting edge of how humanities scholars are now taking the life-changing learning they offer to their immediate communities,” says Joseph Huffman, dean of the School of the Humanities. Disbursement of the NEH grant will take place over the next three years, during which time Messiah’s Office of Development must raise $600,000 to fulfill the 3:1 matching grant. The initial goal of raising $10,000 has been reached. The National Endowment for the Humanities is the largest benefactor of humanities programs in the United States. The funds will sponsor programs like the Hoverter Course, one of the Center’s newest initiatives, which offers a free, college-level series of classes to educationally disadvantaged adults in Perry County, Pennsylvania. Susanna Bede Caroselli, professor of art history, who taught in the Hoverter Course, says, “There are many people who want to know what we teach and whose lives may be touched by it in ways we could not even guess.” “This grant is a strong affirmation that our vision of public humanities is on the cutting edge of how humanities scholars are now taking the they offer to their immediate communities.” life-changing learning — Joseph Huffman, dean of the School of the Humanities 7 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/business/programs/accounting.html http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/mens_soccer/ http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/mens_soccer/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/humanities/center/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/humanities/center/ http://www.messiah.edu/admissions/nationally_recognized.html http://www.messiah.edu/schools/humanities/center/pdf/hoverter_course0708.pdf http://www.messiah.edu/schools/humanities/center/pdf/hoverter_course0708.pdf http://www.messiah.edu/schools/humanities/
