arigorouseducation of distinction Caliber of Messiah faculty enriches students’ learning “She is internationally recognized for her knowledge and helps students recognize what is going on outside of college . . . in the Students commend professors’ ‘infectious love of subject’ and ‘uncompromising academic standards’ In 2007, Messiah College students nominated 48 faculty members for the Dr. Robert and Marilyn Smith Award for Outstanding Teaching, which is presented at Commencement and is one of the most prestigious honors the College bestows on faculty members. The copious volume of nominations is one measure of students’ high regard for the College’s community of educators. From among the many worthy candidates, Robin Lauermann, assistant professor of politics, and Susanna Bede Caroselli, professor of art history, were selected as the 2007 award recipients. Of Lauermann, one student wrote, “She’s always there for her students and willing to go the extra mile to ensure their academic success. She also does not compromise her academic standards. This is a balance I feel that she achieves with rare proficiency.” When nominating Caroselli, a student said, “She has such a magnetic, approachable personality and an infectious love for her subject.” Another added that “she is internationally recognized for her knowledge and helps students to recognize what is going on outside of college and in the real world.” In addition to excelling in the classroom, Messiah College faculty members also make significant contributions to their respective disciplines by authoring books that present their research to larger communities. In turn, their sustained investment in scholarship yields generous dividends in the classroom as students learn about breaking developments in their fields. Wisensale • Growing Up Amish: The Teenage Years ( Johns Hopkins University Press) by Richard Stevick, professor of psychology • International Family Studies: Developing Curricula and Teaching Tools (Haworth Press) by Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology • Cultural Diversity and Families: Expanding Perspectives (Sage Publications) by Raeann Hamon and Bahira Sherif Trask • Of Widows and Meals: Communal Meals in the Book of Acts (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company) by Reta Halteman Finger, assistant professor of New Testament • A Reader in Pentecostal Theology: Voices from the First Generation (Indiana University Press) by Douglas Jacobsen, distinguished professor of church history and theology • Subversive Scribes and the Solomonic Narrative: A Rereading of 1 Kings 1–11 (T & T Clark Publishers, Ltd.) by Eric A.
