Messiah College President's Report 2007 - (Page 9) JENNICA SEHORN ’07 Portland, Ore. MAJORS: Spanish and human services ACCOMPLISHMENT: Awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, Turkey “Especially through my Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages class, I became acutely aware of the needs of newcomers among us. I could relate to feeling lost and afraid in foreign settings, and my heart went out to those who have no choice but to make a new life in a strange place. In spending a year as an English teaching assistant in Turkey, I hope to gain skills that will help me better serve my neighbors here in the United States. At the same time, I will have the opportunity to learn a new language and culture, and to learn from the people around me.” The Department of Theatre’s production of The Talisman, about the legendary storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, provided the opportunity for Messiah students to collaborate with a guest director and guest performers from Touchstone Theatre in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Academic programs meet high national standards Theatre and social work programs earn accreditation Two academic programs at Messiah College received accreditation during the 2006–2007 academic year. The National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) welcomed the theatre department into its membership, recognizing Messiah as “a program with high professional standards in theatre education,” according to Valerie Rae Smith, department chair. She adds that this membership “pushes us to remain current in the art and discipline of theatre.” For the social work program, full four-year accreditation through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) means that for the first time Messiah students complete their entire program, including coursework and field placement, at the Grantham campus. Since 1987, the program’s accreditation had been contingent on its collaboration with Temple University. According to Vicki Root, then-director of the social work program CSWE representatives who visited the College throughout the more than two-year process of accreditation were “genuinely interested in the success of the program and were very affirming of the work that was being done here.” Messiah College’s EpiCenter offers a world of experiential education opportunities Through Messiah College’s EpiCenter (Experiential Program Information Center), students discovered educational courses around the globe, earning college credit while learning about the world and its cultures.
