2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 11) Fueled I am a third-year human development and family science major. I am also a 400-meter dash runner on Messiah College’s track and eld team. It takes a lot of faith to balance the demands of school and of being involved with a varsity sports team. My coach stresses the importance of academics over track. Getting good grades and scoring personal records doesn’t come easy for me. I put my studies as a rst priority, and sometimes I have to miss out on being with friends in order to study for classes. My faith in God also helps me get through tough workouts and competitions. My faith in God helps me in my academic life. My career goal is to become a family therapist. This requires both rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs. Academics don’t come easy to me, and I know that I have to work twice as hard as most students. I have to work ahead on papers because I’m a slow typist, and there are many times when I have three papers due in the same week. I also need to map out my set-up for my papers before I start writing in order to keep my thoughts organized. I know that we are called to do all things for the glory of God, and I write my papers as if I am writing them for God to grade. Tests are my biggest challenge in school. There are many times that I study for a test for two weeks and I still end up with a lower grade than I would like. It frustrates me because faith I know there are students who can wait until the last minute to study for a test and get an A on it. My faith helps me in this area by reminding me that God has a plan for my life. My faith also helps me in my training for track. Most of our practices are intense. The hardest workouts for me are the hill workouts. All of the hills that we run are steep and easily tire me out. When I feel like giving up, I remember that I am glorifying God by doing the workout. Running track is my way to praise God. God gave me the ability to run and the joy of running. Before every practice the whole team prays that our workouts glorify God. Faith is a very important part of competing. I always strive to beat my personal best time. I always need God to help me reach my personal best times and remind me that I am not running for me but that I am running for him. —Stevie Baum ’10, from York, Pa., traveled to Mali last summer to help assess water access for people with disabilities. She received the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation “Giant Steps Award,” which honors a student athlete who has overcome obstacles to compete at the college level. Stevie lives with cerebral palsy.
