2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 12) Fueled faith Hundreds of Messiah College students volunteer each week with local community partners such as Habitat for Humanity. Messiah College earns national recognition for service Service is nothing new to the Messiah College community. From outreach programs to service trips to the annual Service Day that includes hosting the regional Special Olympics, students have oriented themselves to the task of helping others. For these tireless efforts, Messiah College has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. Only six other colleges in Pennsylvania received this honor, awarded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Messiah College is deeply committed to engaging its students in the transformative experiences of servicelearning,” says President Kim S. Phipps. “Placement on the honor roll recognizes the many hours that more than 400 Messiah College students spend in local community service each week.” Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest national recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. The honor is based on factors such as the scope and innovation of service projects, the percentage of student participation, and the extent to which the school offers academic servicelearning courses. For Chad Frey, director of the College’s Agapé Center for Service and Learning, the honor validates the College’s efforts, but also sets a new standard. “To be nationally distinguished for community engagement,” he says, “creates an expectation for Messiah College both internally and externally as we strive for continued excellence and sustained partnerships. Like many other Christian institutions, Messiah shares the challenge of working with limited resources in the face of great needs that are felt all around the world. This award pushes us to be more creative in our scholarship, more collaborative in our programming, and more generous in our giving.” “This award pushes us to be more creative more collaborative in our in our scholarship, generous in our giving.” programming, and more Chad Frey, director, Agapé Center for Service and Learning 12 http://www.messiah.edu http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/
