2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 13) M AT T H E W L A M B ’ 0 9 HOMETOWN: York, Pennsylvania MAJOR: College furthers Dr. Kingʼs vision with service in Harrisburg Students and employees connect with the community in Pennsylvania’s capital In January, 62 Messiah College students and employees participated in Dr. King Community Engagement Day, part of the College’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week. Participants began the day with a driving tour of Harrisburg, convened at a downtown church to hear from various community members, shared lunch catered by a local eatery, and spent the afternoon working on service projects. According to Rebecca Owen, local community service director for the College’s Agapé Center for Service and Learning, the event is intended to help participants become more knowledgeable about situations, needs, and assets in the Harrisburg community. Owen, who coordinates Dr. King Community Engagement Day, says that students and employees responded enthusiastically to the opportunity. “Many wrote on their evaluations that they were surprised by the amount of poverty in their ‘backyard,’ that they had never been to Harrisburg before, and that they were surprised by how much racism is still a part of our society today,” says Owen. Karisa Martin ’11, a member of the planning committee for Dr. King Community Engagement Day as well as one of the tour guides, says that the primary goal of the event was to nd practical ways to live out Dr. King’s ideals and vision in the Harrisburg community. She says, “Our hope was that the tour, panel, and service experience would provide participants with a better sense of the city and its people so they would feel equipped to truly engage in the community of Harrisburg.” Music education with a vocal concentration PURSUIT: Will student teach next spring in both primary and secondary school settings, instructing bands, choirs, and music classes “If I can, as a teacher, nourish a love for music in others while showing them what it means to be a Christ-follower, then there is nothing in this world that I would rather do. . . . When I am performing and experiencing music I am drawn close to God, and I hope to bring that same experience to both my students and those who hear them sing. . . . I cannot wait to start igniting a passion for faith and music within others.” (Left to right) Caitlin Schneider ’08, Janiene Biehl ’09, Kyle Werts ’11, and Joseph Fang ’08, are part of a large team of students who plan and lead the weekly Powerhouse worship services. Powerhouse provides a window of spiritual refreshment Student-led worship lls Hostetter Chapel Almost 19 years ago, students with a passion for promoting worship among their peers joined together to create Powerhouse. This weekly, hour-long service is composed entirely of worship music and run by a group of 25 students who set up, practice, and lead on a rotating basis. Since its inception, Powerhouse has expanded its realm of in uence to include several local churches and even a minor league baseball game. Jason Brown ’09, a bass player for Powerhouse since his rst year at Messiah, attests to the spiritual encouragement he’s witnessed throughout his involvement with the ministry: “Since Powerhouse is a voluntary service — people who attend desire to be there — the spiritual atmosphere is much more intense. Whether they come as a group or by themselves, each person has an opportunity to put their studies aside and focus on God.” 13 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/music/music.html http://www.messiah.edu http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/ministries/worship/powerhouse.html http://www.messiah.edu/ministries/worship/powerhouse.html
