Being a member of a team requires putting forth your best effort, displaying consistency, maintaining a positive attitude, and opening yourself before your teammates. My teammates at Messiah served as continual reminders to love running, love one another, and love God.” Students taking a cross-cultural course last January repose on a French West Indies beach just days before their eventful ight home. Studentsʼ faith comforts others during emergency landing In late January, 24 Messiah College students and 2 educators boarded what was intended to be a non-stop ight from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia. Returning from a threeweek cross-cultural experience in the French West Indies, the group pondered the trip’s impact on their lives. Hours into the ight, pilots reported smoke in the cockpit of their American Airlines Boeing 757. Remarkably, the Messiah students remained calm and seized the opportunity to offer comfort. Lois Beck, associate professor of French and communication, and her husband, George Beck, adjunct instructor of interdisciplinary studies, observed the students praying and singing hymns, holding hands, and assuring fellow passengers. “They must have experienced signi cant fright, but it did not show on their faces,” recalls Lois. Ninety uncertain minutes passed after the initial emergency declaration before the plane was able to make an emergency landing in Palm Beach, Fla., where national media outlets lined up for interviews. Reporters remarked about the students’ faith- lled responses and highlighted the sense of calm that Amanda Buckwalter ’09, and her fellow students, hoped to convey: “It comes naturally to us, [it’s] where we put our trust.” 15 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/mathsci/ http://www.messiah.edu/athletics/sports/track/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/summer08/employee_awards/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/summer08/employee_awards/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/family/ http://www.messiah.edu http://www.messiah.edu/departments/psychology/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/socio/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/latino/mission.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/facility_services/campus_events/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/academics/provost/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/business/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/pr/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/modern/programs/french.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/communication/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/dining/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/visual_arts/programs/inter_studies.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/summer08/employee_awards/pres_awards.html http://www.messiah.edu/schools/health_nat_sci/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/health_nat_sci/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/provost/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/provost/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/summer_academy/index.html
