2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 18) Energized impact In April, Messiah College hosted the historic Compassion Forum with (left to right) moderators John Meacham, editor of Newsweek magazine, and Campbell Brown, CNN anchor, and presidential candidates Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Senator John McCain was invited to what was planned as a non-partisan event, but he declined. The Compassion Forum draws national attention and positive media response Event demonstrates Messiah College’s professionalism and commitment to civil dialogue “Never before have presidential candidates met in the midst of a contested primary to discuss how their faith impacts their public policy stances.” D. Kelly Phipps, adjunct instructor and presidential spouse After hosting the Compassion Forum on April 13, Messiah College continued to draw national attention in the wake of the event, which welcomed to the campus Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama — democratic candidates for the U.S. Presidency in 2008 — for dialogue about issues important to faith-based communities. Senator John McCain declined an invitation to participate in the event, which was co-sponsored by Faith in Public Life, a national, non-partisan, non-pro t resource and communication center for faith leaders ; The One Campaign, and Oxfam America. Broadcast on national television by CNN, the Compassion Forum was a landmark event that brought religious and political leaders together for conversation about moral issues such as AIDS, global climate change, poverty, and genocide in Darfur. “Never before have presidential candidates met in the midst of a contested primary to discuss how their faith impacts their public policy stances,” says D. Kelly Phipps, adjunct instructor and spouse of College President Kim S. Phipps, “and to do so while CNN International broadcasted live from our campus was remarkable.” With 1.9 million viewers tuned in for the event, which also was streamed over the Internet, CNN won the cable news competition on April 13 by a wide margin. continued on next page . . . 18 http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/spring08/compassion_forum/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/spring08/compassion_forum/index.html
