2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 19) JARED QUESENBERRY ’08 HOMETOWN: Crozet, Virginia Compassion Forum continued . . . MAJOR: The event demonstrated that Messiah College is well equipped for participation on the national stage. According to Beth Lorow, assistant director of public relations, “Hosting the Compassion Forum gave Messiah College the opportunity to showcase its students, educators, and campus to a national audience while participating in a very important, mission-relevant conversation about the integration of faith and politics.” The College received overwhelmingly positive feedback from multiple media sources, including Christianity Today, ABC News, and the Harrisburg Patriot-News. In an editorial published by the Patriot-News on April 15, the paper’s editors praised the College for being “more than up to the challenge” of hosting an event of national signi cance. Biology PURSUIT: Initiated and led medical mission trips to Grundy, Va., and Knoxville, Tenn. “As a trip leader, it was great to see students start to get a sense of calling. . . . My own dream is to start a mobile vision clinic by transforming buses into optical clinics and taking them to rural and poor communities throughout North and South America. . . . Messiah has helped me develop a good, re ective approach to missions. Just like our physical eyes need correction, so also do our heart’s eyes need to focus; Christ is the lens that helps us to see.” At Night shines as a rising star in children’s literature Visual art department alum writes and illustrates award-winning children’s book At Night, the most recent publication from author and illustrator Jonathan Bean ’01, has charmed the world of children’s literature, garnering some of its most prestigious awards and earning rave reviews. This tale of a city-dwelling child seeking a quiet place to rest was named one of the top 150 books of the year by Publisher’s Weekly; a Kirkus Review Editor’s Choice award; an Honor Book in the Charlotte Zolotow Award competition; listed on the Horn Book Magazine Fanfare List; and recently won the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award. Bean himself was named one of “Four Fresh Children’s Book Talents” by Publisher’s Weekly. Bean’s playful and engaging style has livened the pages of seven children’s books, including Mokie and Bik and The Apple Pie that Papa Baked. Cherie Fieser, curator of the Ruth E. Engle Memorial Collection of Children’s Book Illustrations — where originals and preparatory drawings of At Night reside — says that Friends of Murray Library “intends to follow Jonathan’s career as it develops. . . . As Jonathan himself returns to campus to teach or speak, our students will recognize in him their own culture of faith, scholarship, and industry.” Messiah College reaches new heights in United Way giving In 2007, the College’s annual United Way Pledge Drive yielded unprecedented employee participation that raised nearly $30,000 — a new giving record in the event’s 12-year history at the College. “Those who chose to give did so because they wanted to give back to the community,” says Kathy Castonguay, human resources project manager and coordinator of the drive, referring to responses from a post-campaign survey. “They also appreciated the opportunity to designate their United Way dollars to a particular non-pro t organization or impact area.” The event’s paramount success in 2007 further enhanced the distinguished cooperation between the United Way and Messiah College, which was honored with a Campaign Excellence Award from the United Way of the Capital Region in 2005. “Messiah employees,” Castonguay concludes, “have a rich history of reaching out to others in need, both locally and globally.” 19 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/bioscience/programs/biology.html http://www.messiah.edu/offices/pr/ http://www.messiah.edu/offices/publications/the_bridge/spring08/compassion_forum/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/visual_arts/ http://www.messiah.edu/murraylibrary/friends.html http://www.messiah.edu
