2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 20) Energized impact On October 3, 2007, representatives from Messiah College and Harrisburg city leaders dedicated the Harrisburg Institute’s new facilities, celebrating the occasion with more than 75 Messiah students, trustees, employees, community friends, and the local media. Pictured here are (left to right) are David Hietala, director of the Harrisburg Institute; Craig Dalen, director of community life at Messiah’s Harrisburg facility; student Jessica West ’08; Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed; Messiah College President Kim S. Phipps; Russ Ford, president and CEO of Harristown Development Corporation; and Kathie Shafer, Messiah’s vice president of operations. Major federal grant awarded to Harrisburg Institute “It is in the Collegeʼs DNA to engage with others for the common good.” David Hietala, director of the Harrisburg Institute Messiah College’s Harrisburg Institute recently received a $630,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to focus on enhancing the capacity of community organizations in their work with at-risk youth in the capital region of Pennsylvania. Combined with an earlier grant received in 2005, also from the Department of Justice, the increase in funding for mentoring programs has enabled the Harrisburg Institute to reach out to an even greater number of community-based organizations — more than 30 have already engaged with the work of the Institute and the shared desire to create a positive impact on youth and families in the region. Jill Osielski, the Institute’s grant project coordinator, noted that urban youth frequently face lives that “are pervaded with chaos. They face issues of poverty, substance abuse, violence, and deteriorating housing, to name a few.” Efforts to develop mentoring initiatives are meant to give youth a reason to hope, to strive to rise above their circumstances and continue trying to create better lives for themselves. “It is in the College’s DNA to engage with others for the common good,” says David Hietala, director of the Harrisburg Institute. “We see these early grants as both providing an outlet for our passion and as a path to increased levels of engagement in the future.” 20 http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/institute/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/institute/ http://www.messiah.edu/news/2007/MC-082-07.html http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/institute/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/institute/
