The academic program includes more than 55 majors and more than 60 minors. Specialized programs include extensive offcampus study, individualized majors, independent study, service-learning, internships, and a ourishing Honors Program. the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disavantaged youth. Messiah was one of only seven colleges in Pennsylvania recognized with this national honor. • Students and educators in the College’s Collaboratory for Strategic and Applied Partnerships and Research partner with regional and international organizations to conduct quantitative analysis and technology and business projects that empower the poor, promote justice for the oppressed, reconcile adversaries, and care for the earth. WHAT DENOMINATIONS DO THEY REPRESENT? HOW MANY PARTICIPATE IN INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS? Many students enhance their college experience through sports. Last year, 345 students participated in Messiah’s athletics programs, with 42 playing two or more sports. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE INCOMING CLASS OF 2012? MEET OUR STUDENTS WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Our students represent 40 states, the District of Columbia, and 23 countries. HOW MANY ARE INVOLVED IN SERVICE? Messiah College teaches students to build community, to serve as agents for peace and reconciliation, and to champion the rights of the poor and the dispossessed. • By the time they graduate, 99 percent of our students will have been involved in some form of community service through the Agapé Center for Service and Learning. During the 2007–2008 academic year, 1,441 students participated in the College’s annual Service Day (at off-campus projects and hosting Special Olympics on campus) and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Engagement Day. Nearly 713 students served on regular local community service outreach teams throughout the year, and 56 students participated in international service during the school year and the summer recess. Altogether, our students contributed nearly 60,000 hours of service during the 2007–2008 academic year. • Messiah’s commitment to service-learning and civic engagement earned recognition on As Messiah College strives to emphasize its embracing evangelical spirit, our students continue to be rooted in a and a variety of many mainline denominations and Christian faith traditions. They are centered on scholarship. While SAT scores are just one measure of academic ability, members of the Class of 2012 are entering with strong scores. In 2007–2008, the middle 50 percent of Messiah College rstyear students achieved SAT scores between 1040 and 1250. Among 2007–2008 rst-year students, 32 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their class and 67 percent graduated in the top 25 percent. There are 19 valedictorians and 22 salutatorians. They are fueled by faith. Members of the class of 2012 enter Messiah already lled with the urge to live out their faith through leadership positions in churches or with faith-based organizations. Their roles — as individual as the students themselves — included volunteering at nursing homes, starting a puppet ministry, and leading worship in their home churches. They are energized for impact. Our incoming students have a passion for community engagement. Whether serving on their schools’ student councils, heading local chapters of the National Honors Society, or representing their high school at a Hispanic Youth Leadership Education Training Seminar, they displayed leadership during their high school years which has prepared them to meet the challenges set before them at Messiah College. 31 Students’ grade point averages tell one important part of their educational story.
