Phipps delivers her “State of the College” address on Community Day, August 28. SEPTEMBER More than 700 rst-year students and 90 new transfer students arrive for move-in day. The SGA initiated, student-run South Side Cafe, an ice-cream parlor and game room, opens its doors on September 11 (top), with the objective of providing scholarships for students with the proceeds. George Pickens, associate professor of cross-cultural ministries, gives the common reading lecture on The Kite Runner. The Of ce of Multicultural Programs coordinates lms, cultural celebrations, and speakers to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The Unembedded exhibit in Aughinbaugh Art Gallery opens (bottom). Department of Theatre presents Bus Stop, William Inge’s charming comedy about a bus load of weary travelers holed up during a snowstorm at a roadside diner. Five new members join the Board of Trustees (bottom). Messiah, as one of only a few colleges participating in the Humanitarian Mine Action Public-Private Partnership Program, is recognized by the U.S. Dept. of State for working globally to disarm land mines. NOVEMBER “Drawn from the Sea,” recent collagraphs by Donald J. Forsythe opens in Aughinbaugh Gallery. Department of Theatre presents Dead Man Walking (top). Governor Edward G. Rendell speaks to communications students about the challenges and rewards of public service as well as the importance of effective communication skills. Men’s soccer team nishes the 2007 season as the Commonwealth Conference champion and the NCAA Sectional champs. The women’s soccer team is the national runner-up (bottom). Four students from the Department of Management and Business win the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Regional Financial Literacy Competition. The College’s dining services team is recognized by the PA Restaurant Association with a 2007 Excellence in Food Safety Award. Among the six award recipients, Messiah receives the highest score (bottom). DECEMBER Philadelphia Brass performs a holiday brass concert. Department of Theatre presents Suppressed Desires and My Name is Rachel Corrie. President Kim S. Phipps and her husband, D. Kelly Phipps, host over 400 guests attending the Messiah College Christmas Celebration, “Following the Christmas Star” (top).
