2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 5) Centered scholarship During my 28 years of teaching and working with Messiah College students, the College has changed in many ways. For example, student enrollment is three times what it was when I rst arrived on campus, the physical plant has expanded signi cantly, and the number of academic and cocurricular programs has exploded. One constant throughout this time, however, has been the College’s commitment to offering the very best Christian higher education — academic excellence grounded in the Christian faith — which has historically de ned Messiah’s core identity and mission, and continues to do so today. In Romans 12, Paul af rms the symbiotic connection between the life of the mind and the life of faith when he exhorts believers to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Following this biblical insight, a Messiah College education does not view developing the life of the mind and the life of faith as separate endeavors; rather, they are understood as complementary and inextricably connected. Therefore, Messiah’s commitment to strong academic preparation as well as spiritual formation is intentionally nourished across the College’s curriculum and throughout campus life. Ryan Rich ’02 and Alexandra Smith ’03 are two Messiah graduates whose vocational paths demonstrate the value of a full-orbed education that nurtures both the intellect and the spirit. An attorney, Ryan is a commercial litigator with the international law rm of Hunton & Williams. Ryan says, “The rigorous academic experience I had at Messiah has de nitely helped me to become a stronger, more mature Christian.” Similarly, Alexandra, a physician and pediatric resident at the Columbia University Medical Center, says that her Messiah education “inextricably linked my faith to my personal and academic pursuits of excellence. Since I graduated from Messiah, my years of clinical training and work as a physician have built upon that foundation.” Ryan and Alexandra are but two of the thousands of Messiah alumni who are serving God and serving humanity in all walks of life and in all parts of the world. This is what a Messiah College education is all about . . . and it is exciting! — Dean C. Curry is director of the College Honors Program and professor of politics.
