Educators bring experience and expertise to the classroom Faculty scholarship and national recognition enrich academic learning Messiah students gain even more insight and motivation from the personal interaction they experience with members of the Community of Educators. Messiah College students have, for many years, reaped the rewards of a low student-to-faculty ratio. And as their educators increasingly are contributing their professional advice and expertise in the national arena, Messiah students gain even more insight and motivation from the personal interaction they experience with members of the Community of Educators. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology and interim dean for the School of Education and Social Sciences was featured in the article “Creating Your Family Medical History,” published in February 2008 on WhatHappensNow.com, a reference website providing “best advice for life” to help people navigate life-changing events. Hamon recommended that readers be prepared by creating a thorough family medical history. “There’s a lot of preventative work that can be done if we see the patterns coming through the generations,” she said. Another Messiah College faculty member — Don Pratt, professor of engineering — will provide students with new opportunities to more deeply explore the roles of engineers and the problems they solve through his work as the engineering content director for the third season of the Public Broadcasting Service’s Peabody Award–winning television series “Design Squad.” The expertise of Mike True, director of Messiah’s Internship Center and chairman of the Internship/Co-op Special Interest Group of the National Society for Experiential Education, was included in a January 6 New York Times article on the increasing emphasis colleges place on real-life work experience. True said, “I like to see students choose to do internships … to take responsibility for their career choices and for getting experience off campus.” Valerie Rae Smith, associate professor of theatre and co-chair of the theatre department, presented Between 2 Chairs, at Messiah, Taylor University, The Brick Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, and Touchstone Theatre in Bethlehem, Pa. Smith — whose father has Alzheimer’s disease and whose young son is reaching ever-increasing levels of awareness — wrote and performed this drama that explores memory loss and development. Feedback sessions followed each performance, allowing Smith and audience members to discuss issues ranging from recent research on learning theory and Alzheimer’s to re ections on changing personal relationships with loved ones who have dementia. Between 2 Chairs was published in the summer 2008 issue of the Johns Hopkins University Memory Bulletin and will be produced by Open Stage of Harrisburg in June 2009. Hamon, Pratt, True, and Smith are just four examples of Messiah educators who serve as valuable resources for their students and communities through their ongoing research and af liations in the public sector. 6 http://www.messiah.edu/departments/visual_arts/ http://www.messiah.edu http://www.messiah.edu/departments/engineering/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/internship/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/internship/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/theatre/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/coe/definitions.html http://www.messiah.edu/academics/coe/definitions.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/family/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/family/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/ http://www.messiah.edu/schools/edu_soc_sci/ http://www.WhatHappensNow.com
