2007 – 2008 Messiah College President's Report - (Page 9) RACHEL HEPKINS ’08 Lilly Endowment Inc. grant nourishes academic dialogue Messiah professors promote scholarly conversations through publication Messiah College’s faculty are committed to fostering important conversations through authorship — from brief articles to creative projects to books — as well as to excellence in the classroom. This year, Oxford University Press published The American University in a Postsecular Age, edited by Douglas “Jake” Jacobsen, distinguished professor of church history and theology, and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen, professor of psychology and director of faculty development. The Jacobsens were awarded a $469,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for a three-year Religion in the Academy project. The couple will co-direct the project with the key objective of stimulating discussion about the place of religion in colleges and universities throughout America and culminating in the publication of a new book. Other Messiah colleagues have also been contributing valuable scholarship through their writing. In 2007–2008, the following faculty published these books: • The Amish and the Media ( Johns Hopkins University Press) co-edited by David Weaver-Zercher, associate professor of American religious history and chair of the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies • Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy ( Jossey-Bass Press) by David Weaver-Zercher, Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt • Faith and Gender Equity: Lesson Plans Across the College Curriculum (Wipf & Stock Publishers) edited by C. Many in the business world see power — the higher up you are on the corporate ladder — as a god. But God has given us his divine power. The same power that he used to raise Jesus from the dead is the same power at work in us. I can’t help but encourage those around me that God has the power to do anything beyond human imagination.” 174 108 63 38 20 9 Additional learning opportunities: SERVICE-LEARNING COURSES 292 students in 25 courses 123 150 students/domestic; 4 students/international 91 9 PHILADELPHIA CAMPUS INTERNSHIPS OTHER NORTH AMERICAN PROGRAMS http://www.messiah.edu/departments/modern/programs/spanish_business.html http://www.messiah.edu http://www.messiah.edu/schools/math_eng_bus/collaboratory/index.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/history/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/history/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/psychology/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/epicenter/ http://www.messiah.edu/academics/epicenter/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/agape/ http://www.messiah.edu/external_programs/internship/ http://www.messiah.edu/departments/brs/programs/bible.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/brs/programs/bible.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/brs/programs/bible.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/education/elementary.html http://www.messiah.edu/departments/history/
