EBACE Show News - May 21, 2008 - (Page 10) EBACE 2008 Zing GSM Text-Message for TFE731 on MSP Honeywell (Booth 322) plans to have a GSM text-message download capability available by next month. Trade-named “Zing,” the new feature will free operators of aircraft equipped with TFE731 turbofan engines, who have enrolled in Honeywell’s MSP program, from having to download data from EECs and DEECs to laptops or PROMs that later must be forwarded to Honeywell over the Internet. The capability initially will be available for operators of Hawker 800-series aircraft by means of an STC developed by Chippewa Aerospace. A technician is shown here working on a TFE731-60. Grob Looks for More Than Just Parts Work, And Beyond the Learjet 85 Grob’s Niall Olver says the production of 30 to 50 Learjet 85s for Bombardier is only to be expected, as Bombardier needs time to build up some brand-new composite ‘knowhow.’ “It will be a major cultural change for the people at Wichita who are used to building entirely in metal,” he tells Show News, “at the same time Niall Olver. it helps us sustain skills at Grob because it comes at a time when some work on the SPn is ramping down and the Learjet program is starting up.” Olver says Grob is keen to do the same design and development work it has done for the Learjet 85 on other new aircraft programs, hopefully with Bombardier. The aerostructures production work for the Learjet is less important: “[Build to print manufacturing] is not really the kind of thing we want to be doing, and we certainly aren’t making much money on it,” he says. “We are doing the work for Bombardier in the spirit of our agreement.” —Robert Hewson as Embraer Taps Honeywell for Mids’ APUs Honeywell has been chosen to supply an advanced version of its venerable GT36-150 APU for its 3,000 nmi range medium-size jet, due to enter service in late 2012, and the 2,300 nmi range medium-light jet, slated for 2013 deliveries, says Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer evp for executive jets. Both aircraft are powered by Honeywell’s 7,500-pounds-thrust HTF7500E, a reduced emissions variant of the HTF7000 that also powers Bombardier’s Challenger 300. Bizjet Movements up at Newquay-Cornwall Newquay-Cornwall airport management and its FBO, Midwest Executive, are at Booth 753 as business aviation traffic in England’s far southwest continues to increase: up 11% last year, with a further 10% forecast for 2008 as more travelers seek surfing beaches, stunning coastline, plentiful golf courses and historic sites—all within an hour’s flight from the UK’s major urban centers. The long runway of the former military base means it is increasingly popular as a technical stop for transatlantic flights, too. And, “Fuel prices at Newquay are very competitive,” says Midwest Executive managing director Nick Weston. The Latest Avanti Interior Is Here Piaggio Aero (Booth 1305) is displaying both its latest aircraft standard and its new company colors. Last year the firm said it was launching an upgraded interior fit for the Avanti II to be developed in partnership with Nordam. Now, the second Avanti to be outfitted with the new cabin is at Geneva. The list of changes to the interior includes redesigned passenger service units with LED upwash and downwash lighting, custom cabinetry, side ledges and a lavatory module. A wide range of trim and finishing materials is available. Every item from the cupholders to the bezels on the light switches was custom designed for the Avanti II, says Piaggio. Nordam is at Booth 1413. Honeywell Flat-Panels for CRT Globals What the Learjet 85 will look like. Honeywell (Booth 322) has been tapped by Bombardier to develop a cost effective flat-panel display upgrade for Global Express/Global 5000 aircraft with Primus 2000XP avionics. Honeywell has developed eight-by-seven inch DU-875 active matrix LCD displays to replace the original equipment DU-870 CRTs, thereby making possible the display of weather graphics, electronic charts and video. However, such capabilities also will require the retrofit of a file server to support them. HondaJet Sales to Europe Expanding Honda Aircraft (Booth 7547) is launching a campaign to expand sales of the HondaJet to Europe. “We are excited to initiate sales in Europe, where we have received a steady stream of inquiries from interested customers who will now have the opportunity to reserve delivery of a HondaJet,” said president and CEO Michimasa Fujino. “The expansion of HondaJet sales to Europe is an important step in the continued evolution of our business strategy, which seeks to address the extensive worldwide demand for HondaJet.” Honda recently expanded HondaJet sales throughout North America, announcing the establishment of a sales and service strategy for Mexico and Canada. 10 May 21, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
