EBACE Show News - May 21, 2008 - (Page 12) EBACE 2008 Hawker Beechcraft Names India Parts House Phenom-enal Legacy Deal Just May Indicate Plans for Even More Embraers When Honeywell announced a $23 billion deal to power Embraer’s new Legacy 450 midlight and Legacy 500 midsize jets (known until yesterday as the MLJ and MSJ) with its HTF7500-E engine, observers sharpened their pencils and said, “This just doesn’t add up.” Honeywell explained away its estimate by saying this included engine support over the life of the program, which could well be 20 years or so. But aren’t these new engines supposed to need less support, not more? The Brazilian manufacturer expects the midlight and midsize segments of the business jet market will account for 2,780 new aircraft valued at $38 billion over the next decade. Embraer has said it wants a 20 to 30% share of those two market segments; a 30% share would amount to 834 aircraft over the next 10 years. On Honeywell’s sums this amounts to a whopping $27.5 million per aircraft, just for Honeywell’s engines. And these are engines that on Bombardier’s Challenger 300 haven’t had a single in-flight shutdown since they entered service. Pressed for an explanation Honeywell later said the $23 billion also includes APUs for the two new Embraer jets. Can APUs really be that expensive? Or is there something else that neither Honeywell nor Embraer are telling us? What else might be covered in their $23 billion deal? —John Morris Hawker Beechcraft (Booth 7462) has selected India-based Arrow Aviation as an authorized distributor for its Rapid Aircraft Parts Inventory and Distribution (RAPID) factory-direct source for aircraft parts. Arrow Aviation Services will distribute parts for all Hawker and Beechcraft aircraft throughout the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, Morocco and Algeria from two facilities located in Kolkata, India, and Dubai, UAE. Arrow Aviation Services is a leading parts supplier in the Indian subcontinent. Its recently opened facility in Dubai, which houses the main warehouse, will offer 24-hour yearround support for spare parts to be distributed across the Middle East and India. Avidyne’s Alliant STCed for Conquest II Avidyne (Booth 563) and S-TEC have an STC to retrofit the Alliant Integrated Flight Deck into Cessna 441 Conquest II twin-turboprop aircraft. The Conquest II is the third model that combines Avidyne’s Envision series of retrofit integrated flight deck products and S-TEC’s IntelliFlight 2100 Digital Flight Control System, joining Hawker Beechcraft’s King Air 90 and 200-series airplanes. The Alliant package for the Conquest II includes dual-redundant Avidyne EXP5000 10.4-inch PFDs, EX500 MFD (shown), S-TEC IntelliFlight 2100 digital autopilot and Mid-Continent two-inch standby instruments, and interfaces to most popular traffic, terrain, lightning, radar and radar altimeter systems. AgustaWestland, Alitalica for Italy Helo Hub AgustaWestland (Booth 7550) and Alitalica of Italy have signed a collaboration agreement to establish the first helicopter hub in Italy at Rome’s Urbe Airport. AgustaWestland will set up a helicopter maintenance center for its helicopters, while Alitalica will offer passenger hospitality services, passenger transport provision and corporate helicopter management services. The helicopter hub is expected to become operational in 2009. The development will include new hangars, hospitality and office areas to support the growth of the VIP/corporate helicopter market in and around the Italian capital and in southern Italy.
