EBACE Show News - May 21, 2008 - (Page 16) EBACE 2008 Marking 45 Years of PT6s Not All Doom And Gloom. . . EBACE presents an opportunity for business aviation professionals to gather, compare marketing notes, discuss financial results and tell it like it is. During a pre-show press conference, Dassault’s Jean Rosanvallon noted a steady tip in the balance of his business jet orders between the U.S. and the rest of the world. It began in 2005, Rosanvallon said, when the U.S. share slipped below 50% for the first time. It slipped to 40% in 2006 and 30% in 2007, with “the trend continuing,” he noted. Charles Edelstenne, Dassault Aviation CEO, Charles Edelstenne. named Brazil and India strong markets for Falcons, but he said that overall sales during the first four months of the year “have not been as robust as in 2007,” when the annual figure reached 212. Russia, according to Rosanvallon, is Dassault’s largest single market. Cessna International Sales vp Trevor Esling named Eastern Europe, Russia, Brazil, India and China as growth markets, and tacked Canada on, as well. In the piston-engine market, where Cessna competes, there has been a small U.S. slowdown, while the rest of the world has shown no decline. This trend was clarified by Roger Whyte, Cessna’s svp of Sales and Marketing, who explained that even within the U.S., the downturn Roger Whyte. is patchy. The states most affected by the sub-prime collapse are showing the greatest shortfall, he said. In the second-hand market, there also is a two-level trend, noted Dassault’s Edelstenne. The oldest pre-used machines are showing loss of value, while the newer ones are achieving expected prices. The moral seems to be—as always— “know your market.” —Paul Jackson It has been 45 years since Pratt & Whitney Canada (Booth 463) rolled the first PT6 engine off the production line, and so this year the company is celebrating the turboprop engine’s sapphire anniversary. The PT6 was developed specially to power the Beech (now Hawker Beechcraft) 90 King Air, and since then, no other similar engine has gained such a wide use of applications. “The PT6 engine’s outstanding dependability, versatility and dispatch reliability have made it one of the most enduring engines in aviation history,” said Claude Lachapelle, vp, business aviation, P&WC. New aerodynamic and materials changes have enabled the PT6 to deliver more power without any significant increase in size. Emissions have been reduced and maintenance intervals extended. The PT6 family has accumulated more than 330 million flight hours to date. Gulfstream Cuts G200 APU Noise A new muffler modification for the Gulfstream G200 APU is making life easier for the aircraft’s operators. The noise level of the APU’s surge-control valve has been cut by 10-12 dB—a reduction that means it no longer runs afoul of tough noise restrictions and some airfields. M-Dot Aerospace, Phoenix, Arizona, undertook the muffler design and manufactures it for Gulfstream (Booth 7478). The muffler has full STC approval and can be installed at Gulfstream authorized service centers. ZR LITE No. 75 for Learjet Fleet Raisbeck Engineering (Booth 367) announced the installation of the 75th ZR LITE Performance System on a Learjet 35A. The work was completed by Duncan Aviation, a Raisbeck authorized dealer for over two decades, on an aircraft operated by MaCair Jet S.A. of Buenos Aires. Demand for ZR LITE remains strong, and total sales are approaching 100. Ryan Setting, chief pilot of the first Learjet 35 series to receive the ZR LITE in 2005 said, “Everything Raisbeck promised still holds true today. After accruing over 400 hours of flight, I am still very happy with the system. Higher altitude and fuel savings make the ZR LITE invaluable in today’s economy.” Honeywell Extends Contract With Hindustan Honeywell International Sarl, Honeywell’s (Booth 322) Swiss subsidiary, and Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. have reached agreement for the Indian firm to manufacture TPE331 engines, components and kits for use on commercial aircraft. The agreement expands the existing manufacturing license that enables Hindustan to build TPE331 engines for military applications. New Swiss Player in Private/Business Services Launched at Booth 1857 this week is Comfort Aviation’s supply-and-demand matching platform, which permits users to find the supplier that offers the service best suited to their needs. Private charters, purchase and management of aircraft, interior services, ground services, maintenance or even aviation jobs are covered by the system. User requests are transmitted to them directly with discretion and they can submit their offer directly to the client. BAE ABJ OK at EBACE BAE Systems Regional Aircraft (Booth 2055) still is faithfully promoting its Avro Business Jet (ABJ). There are now some 23 BAe 146/Avro RJs in service or being converted for a variety of corporate roles. BAE Systems is active in three different market sectors for the ABJ, namely aircraft for private use, business/corporate or corporate shuttle applications, and executive charter roles. Sales Executive Andy Whelan commented, “Market interest in the Avro Business Jet is at an all time high. Sales of the aircraft have taken off in the past 12 months. We feel this is due to its exceptional operational performance, large cabin and value for money.” 16 May 21, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
