EBACE Show News - May 21, 2008 - (Page 18) EBACE 2008 One-Stop Shopping for Honeywell Support Raburn Says He’s ‘Bullish,’ Sees Compelling Arguments for an Eclipse Single “We’re not prepared to make specific comments, but we’re pretty bullish on [the single-turbofan] market segment,” said Vern Raburn, founder, president and CEO of Eclipse Aviation (Booth 7463). “These range from sortajets called ‘The Jet’ all the way through real jets.” Raburn noted that market preference for single engine aircraft starts at the bottom Vern Raburn. and works up. But, he believes that aircraft limited to FL 250 are stuck in the worst icing and turbulence conditions and can’t achieve acceptable fuel economy at such a comparatively low cruise altitude. “Single-engine piston aircraft sales are four times what multi-engine pistons sell. The single-engine turboprop now is accepted as well as multi-engine turboprops. I think that the market for single-engine turbofan aircraft might be 10 to 15 times as large as the market for multi-engine VLJs. “It’s all about the economics of fuel burn,” Raburn said. “We may have hit a home run with our Eclipse Concept Jet. We’ll make more announcements later this year.” —Fred George Honeywell (Booth 322) is offering EBACE attendees a special promotional package for its Global Data Center AFIS, International Trip Support, OneLink satcom voice and data, and OneView Ku-band satellite television services. Discounts of 25% to 50% are available when a package of services is purchased. Aircell Broadband for the Avanti II Piaggio will offer two broadband options for P.180 Avanti II aircraft equipped with Aircell’s “.it” communications option package—the choice of U.S. or world inflight connectivity for e-mail, web surfing and corporate VPN access. “We wish to offer the most reliable, capable and cost-effective broadband connectivity available,” Piaggio commercial vp Giuliano Felten says in an Aircell release. “Aircell’s high-speed data solutions are small, light and a perfect fit for our customers.” The selection marks the first by a major business aviation OEM since Aircell began taking orders less than one month ago, says Aircell (Booth 138). Piaggio is at Booth 1305. Avidyne Broadens Interface for TWX670 Avidyne Corp. (Booth 563) is developing a new “compatibility mode” for its TWX670 lightning detection system that will enable it to send monochromatic lightning and electrical storm cell data to external display systems, such as EFIS, EFBs and MFDs, by means of multiple RS-232 interfaces. CAE Extends Bombardier Training in Europe CAE’s Burgess Hill Training Centre in the UK will receive new Learjet 40/40XR and 45/45XR full flight simulators in the fall of 2009, while a further unit for the Challenger 300 will be provided at a site to be announced—both firsts for training in the two types in Europe. Montreal-based CAE (Booth 601) and Bombardier (Booth 7521) embarked in mid-2007 on a 20-year agreement whereby CAE is Bombardier’s authorized training provider for Global Express, 5000 and XRS as well as Challenger 300. GD Adds 47,000 sq ft Hangar at Dallas General Dynamics Aviation Services is leasing a hangar from Signature Flight Support (Booth 1007) at Dallas-Love Airport to support maintenance on Gulfstream G200 super-midsize aircraft. The addition boosts the total office and hangar space to nearly 170,000 sq ft and increases capacity by eight aircraft at any one time. G650 to Have Collins Controls and HUD Vern Raburn sees large potential single jet market. Gulfstream Aerospace’s (Booth 7478) 7,000 nmi range, Mach 0.85 cruise G650, the firm’s first cleansheet business jet since the 1968 G II, will be fitted with Rockwell Collins (Booth 1208) pitch, roll and yaw pilot controls that will tie into its Thales fly-by-wire flight control system, plus flap and speed brake controls in the center console. It also will be equipped with Rockwell Collins stab trim system. G650 is the first Gulfstream to use full-time stab pitch trim instead of elevator trim tabs. Standard equipment will include a Rockwell Collins Head-up Guidance System in place of the Honeywell HUD used on current-production Gulfstream aircraft. and Thales FBW Computer The G650, the first U.S. business aircraft to have a digital fly-bywire control system, will be fitted with Thales (Booth 940) three-axis, dual-channel flight control computers. The contract initially was valued at $100 million, but with Gulfstream now chalking up 500 orders for the $60 million G650, we’d say it’s worth much more than that. 18 May 21, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
