In production since January, this latest version of the TBM 700/850 family replaces traditional instruments with large liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, while also integrating primary flight, navigation, weather, traffic, ground proximity and technical information—fully associated with a digital autopilot. In addition, the environmental and vapor control system has been replaced by the Global Air Control System from Liebherr Aerospace, which is more efficient and offers a true dual-zone temperature control. An entirely redesigned cabin offers more space, elegance and comfort, with a two-inch width increase and a one-inch ceiling rise, along with high quality leather furnishings. “We already have received an increased level of orders in Europe, and we look forward to supplying more aircraft to the corporate market. EBACE is an important airshow for us,” said Socata CEO & chairman Jean-Michel Léonard. Planned 2008 production of 60 aircraft is already sold out. Sales remain strong for 2009, with orders now being taken for the remaining production line slots in the latter part of that year. —Paul Jackson Inside, the 2008 Socata TBM 850 has a larger and redesigned cabin. A Lengthy Shorts Story The perils of using words such as “first”, “fastest” and “highest” were highlighted this week when Socata’s CEO Jean-Michel Léonard proclaimed his company “The most senior aircraft manufacturer in the world.” The assertion is based on the fact that Socata is a direct descendant of Morane-Saulnier, formed in October 1911 by Léon and Robert Morane and Raymond Saulnier. However, Englishmen Eustace, Oswald and Horace Short established their company in November 1908 (two of the brothers had been marketing balloons since 1902) and Short Brothers plc still exists as a division of Bombardier Aerospace. Although it no longer produces whole airplanes, at least Shorts has retained its original name. Honors even, perhaps? —Paul Jackson The Garmin G1000 IFIS is the backbone of the latest TBM cockpit. 16 May 22, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
