EBACE Show News - May 22, 2008 - (Page 22) EBACE 2008 B/CA Fast Five By William Garvey Edward Bolen president and CEO, National Business Aviation Association, Washington, D.C. A native Kansan and captain of the University of Kansas tennis team, Bolen’s racket proficiency as a semi-pro drove him to the Tulane University School of Law. He worked for the U.S. Senate and then as legislative director for Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R – Kan.) where he was a key participant in the passage of the General Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994. He moved to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, where he was elevated to president and CEO in 1996. In 2004 he assumed the same role at NBAA. Show News’ Jerram’s new badge of distinction. 1 Has the steady growth of EBACE detracted from the NBAA’s big annual convention? Bolen: For the last three years this show has grown substantially by every objective measure and so too has the annual convention, so it would be tough to make the case that one has cannibalized the other. There’s lots of international traffic at both shows, but we get good attendance here from Russians, Africans and Middle Easterners, and that has never been the case at the annual. necessary; do you need the money? Bolen: Single aircraft operators represent 60% of our membership, and 1,000 of our 8,000 members operate piston aircraft. Much of the information sessions at the annual convention address their needs. Still, we’ve been told by many of them that we should dedicate a conference just for them and their operational, tax and safety concerns. So that’s what we’re doing. And remember, we’re a non-profit organization. We determine what the need is first, not the profit motive. And our members have told us they need this. We’re polling them now to determine exactly what kind of information they want presented. Piaggio-Ferrari Men Make Their Marks Show News’ Mike Jerram is an Italian sportscar fan, and brought his Fiat X1/9 Owners Club polo shirt to EBACE for off-duty wear. When Ferrari F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen and Piaggio’s Piero Ferrari attended the show Tuesday, he just happened to have it on hand for signing.”Trouble is,” Jerram says,”I’ll never to be able to wash it again!” 2 Will Geneva remain EBACE’s home? After all, many have commented on the high expense of everything here. Bolen: Europe’s expensive, and we’re not insensitive to that. But if we go someplace no one wants to go to or can’t get to, that might reduce costs but would compromise the show. Palexpo and Geneva have been great partners. We like it here, and they like us here. We’re committed to Geneva through 2012. 4 5 Why San Diego? Bolen: The annual convention’s requirements are 1 million sq ft of convention space, 10,000 hotel rooms and a nearby airport able to display lots of aircraft. That restricts us to Orlando, Atlanta and maybe New Orleans. So, we wanted this on the opposite coast with six months separation. What are your expectations in terms of activity? Current F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen here Tuesday. 3 NBAA is now planning a conference next March 12-14 for owner-operators and small business aircraft operators. Is yet another convention really Bolen: We’d hope to have 200 exhibitors filling about 1,000 exhibit booths and 50 aircraft on display. Columbus to be Available with HGS6000 Rockwell-Collins’ (Booth 1208) HGS6000, plus EVS, will be available as an option aboard Cessna Citation 850 Columbus, both firms confirmed Wednesday. HGS6000 is a secondgeneration head-up display, with active-matrix LCD technology and LED back-lighting that offers 40% more brightness and almost 2.5 times better image resolution. 22 May 22, 2008 Cessna (Booth 7492) wants the HGS6000/EVS system to be available at the Columbus’ entry into service in 2014, but pricing hasn’t been established. The HGS6000 system has been chosen by Gulfstream as standard or optional equipment aboard large-cabin aircraft manufactured at its Savannah, Georgia, facility. —Fred George Piero Ferrari poses with the pen. www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
