EBACE Show News - May 22, 2008 - (Page 8) EBACE 2008 TAECO to Take on Airbus Completions DayJet Financial Woes Won’t Affect Eclipse, Au Contraire, Says Raburn When DayJet, Eclipse Aviation’s largest customer, ran into financial difficulties earlier this month, laid off 260 employees and deferred deliveries of Eclipse 500 VLJs, industry observers thought the slowdown might have a negative impact on the startup Albuquerque, New Mexico-based VLJ manufacturer. Not so, says its chief executive officer, Vern Raburn. “We’re blessed with a large order book. We’ve been shifting folks around in the delivery schedule because Vern Raburn. of slower-than-expected production rates. I have no concern whatsoever about DayJet’s long-term prospects.” DayJet has 700 firm orders and 700 options, Raburn told Show News, accounting for more than half of the firm’s 2,600 orders. Raburn also said he’ll announce a substantial number of new orders once EASA certification is obtained. China’s Taikoo (Xiamen) Aircraft Engineering Co. (TAECO) is working with Airbus to establish a cabin completion center for corporate and business jets. TAECO would become the first approved completions center in China (and all of Asia) and is hopeful that it will be ready to start seeking EASA approval in 2009. Airbus is providing personnel to support engineering and design work, supplier network development and other required essentials. Hong Kong-based ELTRA will act as TAECO’s partner in setting up its supplier network. Business Aviation Pays for Greys The decision to concentrate on private aviation has paid off big time for Greys of London (Booth 132), says sales director Michael Wilson. Greys provides chauffeurdriven Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes S-class and other premium vehicles. “We supply cars to collect people from their airplanes, and we’re the best at it,” Wilson says. “Our business has doubled in the past year,” he told Show News, predicting that it will double again this year. Greys supplies food via “chiller van” to business jet caterers too, with NetJets a major client. Marshall Aerospace Expands at Cambridge Work is underway on a business aviation development worth GBP4.5 million at Marshall Aerospace Cambridge, which will incorporate a purpose-built integrated FBO and MRO facility. Due to open in late autumn 2008, a 25,000 sq ft hangar is being built adjacent to the existing MRO facility at Cambridge. Both facilities will be linked by an integrated purpose-built FBO, which will offer a full suite of services for the corporate flyer including exclusive customer lounge facilities on two levels, flight crew sleep cabins and quiet rooms, special planning and weather centres, and catering for passengers and aircraft. Customer fleet offices also will be available. Booth 685. IWG Looks to Supply Water Units to Embraer Canada’s International Water-Guard Industries (Booth 853) has a new Brazilian patent for its circulating potable water system, paving the way for the C-PWS to be used on Embraer aircraft, according to sales and marketing director Giles Lapierre. IWG’s C-PWS has been retrofitted thus far to the Boeing Business Jet, Bombardier Global Express, Airbus A310 and Gulfstream GIV, and a deal with Gulfstream through 2010 was disclosed in March. Continual circulation prevents water from freezing at high altitudes “and does so while minimizing the electrical heaters required by traditional designs,” IWG says. The firm holds U.S. and Canadian patents too, and also offers a UV system for water purification, allowing upload of water supplies virtually anywhere without fear of disease. Lisa Tests Versatile Recreational Single Savoy, France-based Lisa Airplanes (Booth 1840) is test-flying its Rotax 912S-powered Akoya single that can land anywhere—on water and snow, for example—and has an integral parachute for added safety. The Akoya can take off and land in less than 330 ft and features a pivoting wing and retracting skis. First flight was in August, and the company is girding for a ’round-the-world voyage of a solar-powered electric variant dubbed Hy-Bird next year. UVTripPlanner and BizFlight.NET Join Forces Schedulers and dispatchers can now access Universal Weather and Aviation’s UVTripPlanner global airport data when using Travico’s BizFlight.NET scheduling software. BizFlight.NET provides integrated software for business aviation , with features for commercial or private operations. The Universal UVTripPlanner is a pre-flight reference tool featuring worldwide airport data for over 25,000 airports across the globe. BizFlight.NET’s innovative design and NET/SQL server platform allow easy migration to future operating systems such as Microsoft Vista. Universal is at Booth 347. AirCell Telecom Router Easier to Certify AirCell (Booth 138) says the latest CTR (cabin telecommunications router) for its Axxess cabin communications system is easier to field certify while still providing customers with “robust” 802.11b/g WiFi coverage. “AirCell has eased the effort required for certification,” says Gary Bosemer of Standard Aero, which completed the first installation of the new AirCell router on a Dassault Falcon 20 operated by a customer in Texas. Standard Aero is at Booth 641. 8 May 22, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://BizFlight.NET http://BizFlight.NET http://BizFlight.NET http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
