Farnborough Show News - July 14, 2008 - (Page 32) BUSINESS AVIATION FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Gulfstream Snags $1.9 Billion NetJets Deal Fifth Anniversary of Gulfstream’s London-Luton Service Center Gulfstream Aerospace’s London-Luton Service Center, the firm’s first and only company-owned service center outside of the U.S., serviced 1,350 aircraft in 2007, the majority of which are Gulfstream-brand aircraft based in Europe and the Middle East. The Luton facility works on all models of Bethpage-, Savannah- and Tel Aviv-built Gulfstream jets. These include current-production G350, G450, G500 and G500 models, GIV-based G300 and G400 aircraft, plus Legacy GII, GIII, GIV, GIV-SP and GV aircraft, along with the G200 manufactured at IAI’s plant at Ben Gurion International Airport. The Gulfstream facility has a 56,000 sq ft maintenance hangar and has earned approvals from the U.S.’s FAA, the UK’s CAA, the EU’s EASA, the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and Bahrain’s CAA. Notably, it also was the first maintenance facility outside the U.S. to be awarded the FAA’s Diamond Certificate of Excellence for aviation maintenance technicians. The spares inventory now has a market value of $25 million, and the facility employs 100 people. The synergistic relationship Gulfstream’s maintenance facility has with neighboring Signature Flight Support may help explain part of its success. Signature consistently wins the highest marks from visiting pilots. It offers 24-hour customs/immigration services and it has a 74,000 sq ft hangar to keep aircraft as large as BBJ2s out of the weather. With 16,000 business aircraft movements per year, London-Luton ranks at the top of UK airports that serve business jets. It has a 7,087 ft-long runway, and it’s only 32 miles from downtown London, not far off the M1 highway. —Fred George Gulfstream Aerospace (Chalet J1, Business Aircraft Park) will supply NetJets with a total of 40 new Gulfstream aircraft valued at approximately $1.9 billion under an agreement signed in June. Four Gulfstream G450s and four G550s will be delivered to NetJets each year from 2012 through 2016. The deal also includes long-term maintenance support. NetJets has over 90% of the long-range cabin fractional market and is the world’s largest operator of Gulfstreams. As of last month its worldwide Gulfstream fleet totaled 110: 34 G200s, 55 GIV-SPs/G400s/G450s, and 21 G550s/Vs. Embraer Phenoms: Made in Florida With an investment of around $50 million, Embraer is to base its U.S. final assembly facility for the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300 at Melbourne Airport, Florida. Apart from final assembly, the facility will have a paint booth and delivery hangars for both types. It will also become the customer design center for all models. All assemblies will be transported to the new facility by ship from Brazil, U.S.-supplied equipment such as engines will be delivered directly to the plant. Phenom 100 central fuselage assembly process is shown here. Embraer is at Chalet C33-35. NORDAM to Build Cabinetry for Falcon 7X Dassault Falcon Jet has selected the NORDAM Group to manufacture cabinetry for its Falcon 7X. Under terms of the $70 million contract, NORDAM will produce full shipsets for select Falcon 7X jets, a total of 22 deliverables for each set, including galleys, closets, vanities and pocket doors. The first shipset will be delivered late this year and the program will last through 2011. NORDAM will build, assemble and finish all of the cabinetry at its Wichita, Kansas, facility. In addition to the cabinetry program, NORDAM (Hall 2, Stand B8) recently began production of a variety of interior panels for the Falcon 7X, 2000 and 900. Aircelle to Supply Nacelle for Learjet 85 Plasir, France-based Aircelle has been named the engine nacelle supplier for Bombardier’s new Learjet 85. Aircelle (Hall 4, Stand B12) will design, produce, supply and support the complete nacelle package for the aircraft’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307B turbofan engines, including Aircelle’s PERT two-door thrust reverser system, air inlet, fan cowl doors, associated equipment and full nacelle integration. “This is a win that positions Aircelle as an important supplier for Learjet. We are glad to be associated with the growth of the Bombardier product line on such an advanced, new generation product,” said Aircelle chairman and CEO Jean-Pierre Cojan. ExecuJet on the Ball for Euro 2008 The UEFA Euro 2008 football championship, hosted last month by Switzerland and Austria, attracted a significant number of visitors flying in by private jet, according to ExecuJet Europe. Its FBO at Zurich Airport experienced its busiest month of the year to date, with more than 800 movements during June, representing an increase of 150% over an average month and eclipsing the former record movements achieved during the World Economic Forum week in January. The jets flew in from cities all over Europe, with the bulk of the traffic originating in Austria, Germany and Spain. Cessna’s Ex-U.S. Market Grows Cessna reports a record 773 business jet orders in 2007 and says that for the first time ever, Citation orders outside the U.S. account for more than half of the firm’s backlog. Citation deliveries reached 387 in 2007, up from 307 in 2006 and an increase of 50% over 2005. The Textron company said it plans to deliver 470 business jets by the end of 2008.
