Alenia Sees Superjet With ATR “In our vision ATR and Superjet are an integrated family,” says Giovanni Bertolone, CEO of Alenia Aeronautica, which jointly owns ATR with EADS, holds 51% of the Superjet International company that will certify, market and support the Russian jet in the West, and 25% plus one share in the Sukhoi company that will build it. “We are looking for the family to offer, on the one side, the turboprop aircraft, and on the other, the jet.” Just which “family” he meant Bertolone did not make clear, except to say that with the ATR turboprop offering 40-70 seats and the Superjet 90 seats and above, there is a definite compatibility in product. “There are reasons for collaboration for both companies,” especially on the sales side, he said. A closer industrial integration between ATR and Superjet will depend on the evolution of ATR, Bertolone pointed out, “but that is a delicate matter.” Alenia’s parent, Finmeccanica, has made it clear in the past that it wants to buy out EADS’ 50% share in ATR, but the owner of Airbus has been reluctant to sell, especially since the resurgence of demand for turboprop regional airliners. However, observers are waiting to see if EADS’ and Airbus’s attempts to sell off commercial aerospace plants and facilities will include the Toulouse-based manufacturer. Bertolone said sales prospects look good for the Superjet outside Russia, especially Giovanni Bertolone. in high growth markets such as India and China. The first flight of the aircraft on May 19 underscored that the program is moving ahead. “The technologically most risky phase is behind us,” Bertolone noted. —John Morris when others can’t.
