Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 16, 2008 - (Page 12) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Anti-Missile Camps-100 Wins First Customer Novator Program Is ‘Bluff’ Says Vympel Representatives from Russia’s Vympel missile design bureau, part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation JSC, state that the Novator AAM/KS-172 long-range air-to-air missile is a “complete bluff” and will not end up in series production. “This missile is not going to be a real program, and you should not pay any attention to it,” says a TMC official. The Novator AAM was originally shown in the early 1990s and has most recently been advertised as part of the advanced weapons complement for the Sukhoi Su-35 Super Flanker. “When Su-35 goes into service with either a domestic or foreign customer, it will be our longrange AAM on the aircraft and not someone else’s,” insists Vympel’s air-to-air missiles. the TMC rep. More than a decade ago Vympel developed the KRPD-TT, a prototype missile that was the basic RVV-AE active homing AAM with a ramjet motor, and could revive it now. This missile has an advantage over any other options because Vympel did not have to change the flight control system for the missile in order to make it ramjet-capable. The idea for the missile came from Vympel’s work on the Kub/Kvadrat 38M9M3 surfaceto-air missile (SAM-6) air defense system. —Reuben F. Johnson Saab Avitronics and Chemring (Hall 4, Stand E7) have secured the first two customers for the Camps-100 civil aircraft missile protection system, with initial deliveries due this year. The first user will be an Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia twin turboprop from Naturelink, a South African-based operator that flies for the United Nations and other non-governmental organizations. Camps-100 comprises four Saab Avitronics MAW-300 ultraviolet missile-warning sensors capable of tracking up to eight threats simultaneously, two BOA electromechanical countermeasures dispensers from the same company, a central computer unit and a cockpit control panel from Saab. RTM322: 100,000 Hours on UK Apaches Rolls-Royce Turbomeca reports that the RTM322 has notched 100,000 flight hours powering the UK Army Air Corps’ fleet of AgustaWestland Apache helicopters. The landmark comes almost exactly ten years after the RTM322 was fitted to the Apache for trials, the manufacturer notes, adding that more than 20% of the time was logged in the harsh environment of desert operations. “The RTM322 is supporting the Apache in delivering an extremely capable effect in the Gulf region,”, said Squadron Leader Jim Press, “through both its performance and reliability” He is project lead for the engine within the UK MoD. “Customer feedback shows that we have an engine which performs well in a harsh operating environment,” said John Boughton, Rolls-Royce Turbomeca board member and director of defense aerospace customer business with Rolls. “We are now able to offer customers even more power through a growth version of the engine that is now available for the NH 90 and EH101 helicopters,” Boughton said. Turbomeca is at Chalet C9-12 and at Stand B12, Hall 4. as Rolls Opens Regional HQ in Virginia Virginia Gov.
