At Tuesday’s press conference given by the Russian state arms export agency, Rosoboronexport (ROE), the head officials of the delegation from Moscow were determined to talk about how important the Farnborough venue is in developing joint ventures with European firms. They were then asked twice to give concrete examples of cases in which a Russian and a European firm had cooperated to jointly develop a weapon system. The short answer is that they do not exist. The only examples of cooperation that the delegation could give were Sagem for Sukhoi. those instances when a foreign customer had asked for a piece of European equipment to be integrated onto a Russian platform, such as the Sagem hardware used on the Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI. Put simply, in the 17 years since the Soviet Union went away, there has been no real cooperative development with European industry. There are a number of areas in which Russian and European industry could benefit from each other’s knowledge, but thus far, the laws that govern Russian military-technical cooperation with foreign nations have made this all but impossible. Joint developmental efforts—like the BrahMos missile program in India—are the exception rather than the rule. —Reuben F. Johnson Sikorsky (Chalet D14-15) says customers have confirmed interest in about 100 of its new S-76D, scheduled for first flight in the fourth quarter of this year. If all these confirmed positions are converted to delivery contracts, they would be worth more than $1 billion, Sikorsky said. The S-76D is on track for initial certification in late 2009. It will offer a 1,000-pound useful load increase, and extended range compared to the S-76C+. Other improvements will include: all-composite, flaw-tolerant main rotor blades; optional rotor ice protection system; advanced Thales T opDeck avionics system and autopilot; dual speed rotor with active vibration control system; Pratt & Whitney Canada PW210S engine; additional fuel capacity; new electrical generation system; and Quiet Zone technology main gearbox. Embraer Eyes the Enginemakers “We are in constant contact with all the engine manufacturers regarding the next breakthrough in technology; we are following the geared turbofan and open rotor developments,” said Embraer’s Luiz Sergio Chiessi, vp Market Intelligence, Airline Market. “Open rotor is expected to be a 10% better fuel burn than the geared turbofan, but we won’t get a clearer picture until around 2009/2010. Then we will be in a better position to judge.” BAE’s Unmanned Airship for Civilian Missions Updated and adapted to carry payloads, the GA22 airship is positioned to become an attractive platform for communications relay stations or surveillance missions. The airship could carry payloads weighing up to 150 kg to heights of more than 6,500 ft. BAE Systems (Pavilion OE11) plans to integrate its existing Unmanned Autonomous Systems into the GA22, making the technology more accessible to potential users. According to Richard Williams, director of civil autonomous systems at BAE Systems, the new airship could open new markets for the company, yet untapped by conventional UAS, particularly in civilian missions, from sporting occasions to gathering data on floods and forest fires. At the moment, GA22 is radio-controlled, but the plan is to make it fully autonomous. Raytheon in Key Satellite Payload Trade Study Raytheon (Chalet B7-12) has completed a key satellite payload trade study with Northrop Grumman, the prime contractor for the Space Tracking and Surveillance System. Results of the study may be used to enhance the performance of follow-on satellites, improving their capacity to provide timely midcourse tracking data and report missile attacks. The Missile Defense Agency plans to develop and maintain a small constellation of satellites to detect enemy missiles through all phases of flight. Raytheon’s early warning technology permits acquisition and tracking above and below the horizon. Cambridge Dons FBO Mantle Due to open at Cambridge in late autumn are a £4.5 million, 25,000 sq ft hangar and purpose-built FBO that will offer a full suite of services for the corporate flyer, including exclusive customer lounge facilities on two levels, flight crew sleep cabins and quiet rooms, special planning and weather centers, and catering facilities for passengers and aircraft. Customer fleet offices will also be available. Constructed for Marshall Aerospace (Hall 4, Stand A12), the facility offers operators an airport with direct access to London and beyond. Kilfrost Introduces ‘Green’ Deicing Solution UK-based Kilfrost has developed DFsustain, a “green” deicing product created from Susterra, a corn-based glycol formulated by DuPont Tate and Lyle BioProducts. DFsustain replaces the usual glycol solution that is refined from crude oil and reduces the carbon footprint of aircraft operators.
