Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 16, 2008 - (Page 22) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Snecma Signs Deals With S7, Aigle Azur Timing Is Everything in Future Air Traffic Management As an airliner flies from one airport to another nowadays, air traffic control does not track and actively manage the timing of the flight’s progress, but that is about to change. The days of 3D air traffic management without much thought about the fourth dimension (time) are numbered. Richard Deakin, svp of the Thales Air Systems Div., says that the use of 4D trajectory management from gate to gate is an upRichard Deakin. and-coming concept that is key to both the U.S. NextGen ATC modernization program and Europe’s Single Sky Air Traffic Management (SESAR) project. The Thales unit has installed 260 of its Eurocat X automated ATC systems in en route and terminal air traffic control centers in 55 nations. “You need to have 4D trajectory management to enable [enhanced] flow control and 4DT is a key building block,” says Deakin. At Stockholm’s Arlanda airport, SAS is demonstrating the use of these procedures. A 737 NG sends its intended flight path in 4D from a GE (formerly Smith’s) flight management computer to an ATC computer on the ground. Controllers can then approve the aircraft’s estimated time of arrival over the threshold from one hour before touchdown or revise it by issuing a new “required time of arrival” (RTA) as much as six minutes earlier or later. The air navigation service provider of Sweden—Luftfartsverket (LFV)—and Avtech, a consulting company in Stockholm, report that aircraft are crossing the threshold at plus or minus seven seconds of the RTA. Deakin says that the control of time needs to begin before pushback. Like lots of other airline passengers, he frequently finds that the plane he is in is at the end of a line of a dozen or more jets waiting for takeoff. “There is a huge amount of fuel burned while waiting to take off,” he says. So “4DT gate-to-gate” can make a huge difference, not only on the timing of a pushback, but in controlling the speed of a jet inbound to an airport. —David Hughes Siberia Airlines and French carrier Aigle Azur have both selected Snecma Services for maintenance deals. Under the four-year Aigle contract, Snecma will provide MRO services for the CFM56-5B engines that power its A320 fleet. Siberia Airlines, known under the trademark S7 Airlines, signed a 13-year by-the-hour engine service contract. S7 last year bought nine additional A319s. Snecma will handle maintenance for these and for the other CFM56 engines operated by the carrier. Snecma is at Hall 4, Stand B12. Maryland Aero Consortium at Farnborough Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development, along with seven aerospace industry organizations based in the state, are touting the capabilities of Howard County's aerospace industry at the Maryland Pavilion (Hall 3, Stand B20). The high-tech corridor, located between Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., near Howard County, is home to the U.S. Navy's Patuxent River flight test center and several aircraft components and military avionics concerns, plus it's in close proximity to key U.S. government agencies such as the National Security Agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, among dozens of others. Small Selex Radar Makes F’boro Debut Selex Sistemi Integrati has unveiled its LYRA 10—a new, small radar tailored to vehicle, tower-mount and man-portable applications. According to its manufacturer, the LYRA 10 can detect people, vehicles, boats and low-flying helicopters to a range of 24 kilometers. Selex says that it “guarantees very low electromagnetic emission, short re-deployment and maintenance time with a consequent ease of operation.” Selex builds the LYRA 10 in Naples, Italy, where fullrate production is expected to begin soon. Selex also makes the LYRA 50 radar for Vessel Tracking Systems (VTS) applications, and the LYRA 80 for maritime surveillance. Selex is at Pavilion OE1-2. RAF Picks Northrop Grumman LAIRCM Northrop Grumman (Chalet A1-5) has been selected to provide its laser-based Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures System (LAIRCM) for the UK Royal Air Force’s (RAF) airborne tanker and transport aircraft. The contract, valued at $93 million, calls for NG’s Defensive Systems Division to provide the LAIRCM hardware and support for the RAF’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft program (FSTA) to Thales, UK, which is part of the consortium. The consortium will provide the RAF with a fleet of 14 new A330-200 aircraft, scheduled to come on line in 2011. They will replace the aging existing fleet of VC-10 and Lockheed L1011 TriStar aircraft. First Grand to a Russian Private Owner AgustaWestland (Pavilion OE1-2) has delivered the first Grand light-twin turbine helicopter sold in Russia to a private owner. AgustaWestland previously sold a number of AW119 and AW109 Power helicopters to private and corporate users in Russia. The company plans to expand its operations there through the contract and distribution agreement recently signed with Oboronprom Corp. and Lloyd’s Investment Corp. This three-stage agreement also addresses the potential establishment of maintenance centers to support an expanding helicopter fleet in country, as well as joint production. Safran to Create Electronics Unit Safran (Hall 4, Stand B12) reportedly plans to group electronics activities from various affiliates, including Hispano-Suiza and Messier Bugatti, into a new division as part of a plan to develop all-electric aircraft technologies. The move would strengthen the electronics capability of Sagem, whose acquisition was motivated in part by the growing importance of electronics in aircraft mechanical systems. 22 July 16, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
