Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 16, 2008 - (Page 30) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Hexcel Notches Largest Order, for A350 XWB Hexcel has secured its largest carbon fiber order ever—for between $4 and $5 billion—to deliver material through 2025 to Airbus for the A350 XWB aircraft, which will be 53% composite. The historic contract comes as Hexcel opens three plants in Europe this year and invests $280 million to increase its carbon fiber manufacturing capacity to 7,000 metric tons by 2010. Here at Farnborough, Hexcel is discussing several new composite technologies that might help aircraft designers and manufacturers. One is HexPly M56, a new out-of-autoclave prepreg for secondary structures in aircraft. Unlike traditional aerospace prepregs that need an autoclave cure to produce the desired qualities, HexPly provides the same results from a simple oven cure under vacuum. This allows aircraft manufacturers to avoid the capital investment associated with autoclaves. Hexcel will also be showing its machinable composite tooling material at Farnborough. HexTool provides many benefits for the design of composite tools, including the fact that the material can be machined without distortion, allowing complex shaped tools to be manufactured to tight tolerances while maintaining vacuum integrity. The A350 XWB will be 53% composite, and has made for Hexcel’s largest carbon fiber order ever. FIDAE 2010, a Window on Latin America The top leaders of FIDAE (Feria Internacional del Aire y del Espacio), the largest aerospace show in South America, are here at Farnborough, with the commander of Chile’s air force set to launch the 2010 event. President of FIDAE 2010, Gen. Julio Escobar, and the recently appointed CEO Roberto Avendano, chief executive of the fair, to be held in Santiago, Chile, from March 23-28, 2010 are talking up the potential of the region as a market for aerospace and defense technologies. The Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean air force (FACh), Ricardo Ortega Perrier, is also part of the delegation. The FACh is the most modern air force in the region since being equipped with F-16 fighters a 50-50 mix of civil avicarrying U.S. and Israeli ation and defense. It also weapons. He noted that the event will be taking place at the same time Chile is celebrating its bicentennial anniversary. Avendano indicated that a great deal of the show’s interior space is already booked following the biggest-ever FIDAE 2008 earlier this year. The FIDAE team can be found here at Farnborough 2008 in Hall 3, Stand D3. The FIDAE 2008 show in Santiago, Chile was the biggest in the history of the series. The first FIDAE was held in 1980.
