Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 16, 2008 - (Page 4) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Rolls AE2100D2s for More C-27Js NGB Will Be Competed, Says Davis of Boeing IDS: Time Running Out for 2018 Darryl Davis, president, Advanced Systems, Boeing IDS, fields the inevitable question about the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Bomber (NGB) program–and whether or not Northrop Grumman already has the NGB in the bag, thanks to “black budget” funding. He tells Show News, “I would find it hard to believe that the Air Force will do a bomber program without a competition. “I feel strongly that it won’t be a sole-source program–they will comDarryl Davis. pete it. We teamed with Lockheed Martin because we expect a competition and I think in the kind of acquisition environment we are in right now there has to be a competition.” “People say that the long range strike system is going to be a bomber and it probably is, but it could be other things like a long-range missile or Prompt Global Strike,” Davis says. “The talk is still of a ‘2018 Bomber’ but our feeling is that we’re running out of time to get that done. We think there might be some kind of a statement from the Air Force soon, but if we don’t see something in the FY2010 budget it will be difficult if not impossible to make 2018. “Our dialogue with the Air Force on this continues at a low level. The Air Force now has a leadership change-over to deal with. Will the new commanders maintain the same level of interest in the program? We don’t know.” —Robert Hewson Rolls-Royce yesterday disclosed a nine-year, $900 million deal with Alenia Aeronautica to be the exclusive propulsion system provider for the C-27J Spartan medium-lift transport. The Spartan is powered by twin AE2100D2 engines with six-blade Dowty propellers. The latest deal builds on a 2006 contract for 42 aircraft “bringing the total guaranteed volume to 155,” Rolls said. The engine supplier also noted that as many as 180 engines for 78 C-27Js were placed under contract by the U.S. military as part of the Joint Cargo Aircraft program last year, with potential volumes of 145 aircraft. Rolls-Royce is at Chalet D1-3 here, and Hall 4, Stand G17. Seven 737s Are for Nigeria’s Arik Boeing said yesterday that seven Next-Generation 737s already on its published order tally are for Arik Air, bringing the Nigerian airline’s 737NG order total to 17. The carrier currently operates six 737-700s, Boeing said. “We are committed to the advancement of Nigerian aviation,” said Arik Air chairman Sir Arumemi-Johnson. “Arik is well positioned across the Boeing product line to pursue our growth plan and usher in a new era of commercial aviation in Nigeria.” The airline also has five 777-300ERs and seven 787-9 Dreamliners on order, and plans to buy four 747-8 Intercontinentals, Boeing said. PlaneConnect Transmits 10,000th Downlink Gulfstream’s PlaneConnect maintenance datalink has transmitted 10,000 downlinks to Gulfstream Technical Operations in nine months. PlaneConnect automatically relays messages generated by the Crew Alerting System and Central Maintenance Computer on airborne aircraft to operation centers on the ground, and then via e-mail to operators. Technicians use the information to assess the aircraft’s maintenance requirements, allowing them to arrange for parts or service personnel to be available before the aircraft lands. Approximately 135 large-cabin Gulfstream aircraft operators use PlaneConnect. Of those, about 90% choose to have the information sent to Gulfstream Technical Operations in addition to their own flight departments. K2 SmartJets Orders Two Legacy 600 Jets Embraer has signed an order with K2 SmartJets of Greece for two more Legacy 600 aircraft. The deal is valued at $53.86 million, based on 2009 economic conditions. First delivery is scheduled for 2009. K2 SmartJets took delivery of its first Legacy 600 in July 2007. The two additional jets will allow the air charter operator to respond to increasing demand for flights to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Embraer is at Chalet C33-35. CAE Has C$128 Million in Contracts CAE announced yesterday at Farnborough more than C$128 million of military and civil aviation contracts. The civil aviation contracts are for the sale of four full-flight simulators and training devices to Etihad Airways, British Airways, Bombardier and Embraer. The military contract, valued at more than C$78 million, is for training support services to the Commonwealth of Australia. A CAE A380 sim is shown here. CAE is at Chalet A27. Parker Wins Mitsubishi RJ Hydraulics Contract Parker Aerospace (Hall 4, Stand A16) has been selected by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to supply the complete hydraulic system for the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet. The MRJ system comprises three independent hydraulic circuits, including engine-driven pumps, electric-driven AC motor pumps, the power transfer unit, reservoirs, filters, accumulators, heat exchangers and valves, sensors and ground connection equipment.
