Meggitt’s All Over the G650: Including Wheels & Brakes Meggitt and its subsidiaries have come to Farnborough 2008 (Hall 3, Stand C8) in a position of strength, thanks to a recent string of lucrative contract awards involving the new, large and long-ranging Gulfstream G650 business jet. Several Meggitt group companies have been selected to provide key components for the aircraft and its Rolls-Royce BR725 engines. Among them are Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems, Dunlop Equipment, Whittaker Controls, and Vibro-Meter. Meggitt Aircraft Braking is developing new, lightweight aluminum main wheels and compact carbon brakes, which will be tailored to the specific demands of the G650’s ocean-hopping flight profile. This multi-million dollar deal is Meggitt’s largest-ever wheels and brakes contract in the business aviation sector. Whittaker Controls will provide the G650’s power transfer unit shutoff valve and ground suction shutoff valve, while Dunlop Equipment and Vibro-Meter are both working with Rolls-Royce on systems related to the BR725 turbofan. Dunlop Equipment will provide an engine pneumatics valve package estimated to be worth approximately £60 million ($119.2 million) over the life of the program. Vibro-Meter’s deal— worth around £15 million ($29.8 million)—covers BR725 sensors and ignition systems. Vibro-Meter will provide a perengine set of around 35 parts, including sensors for air, oil and fuel temperature, shaft speed, oil and fuel pressure, fuel flow and oil debris monitoring, as well as the engine’s ignition system. At Farnborough, Meggitt plans to unveil an advanced ice protection system designed to use just half the energy of traditional bleed-air systems. Electro-Thermal Ice Protection (ETIP) works by matching power output to ambient conditions, such as true airspeed, temperature and ice severity. This allows the ETIP to supply only the amount of power needed to control ice accretion and shedding, from an aircraft’s wings, tail section, rotors and engine inlets. “We can provide the right power, in the right place, for the right condition,” says Ian Noble, head of marketing for Meggitt Thermal Systems. ETIP integrates de-ice, anti-ice and runback control features. A key component is a fully evaporative upper surface to counter the dangerous reforming of melted ice, with continuous protection provided by a splitter strip running along the wing leading edge. Energy savings result from varying the heat intensity across the wing, depending on the severity of the icing conditions encountered. In another recent Meggitt success, its Endevco unit has teamed with Boeing Commercial Airplane Group to develop a new technology that measures pressure at numerous locations along an aircraft’s wing. The Endevco Pressure Belt (EPB) also computes the pressure coefficient that determines structural loads during various flight conditions. More than 600 of the belts have been produced for Boeing 747, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft, and are now available for other applications as well. Measurements obtained by the EPB can be used to calculate payload limits, engine efficiency, fuel economy and other operational parameters. Since the EPB installation is non-invasive—comprised of tiny sensors mounted on a flexible strip—it may be used on aircraft with composite wings, such as the 787. Also at Farnborough, Meggitt is expected to debut a new, “smart” motor control actuator system, the product of a two-year research and development effort. It features a closed-loop regulator that detects flow, pressure and temperature, enabling a high degree of fine-tuning for specific requirements. Meggitt’s modulating actuator is extremely compact, and can be used as a direct replacement for pneumatic valves in temperatureappropriate locations. Examples have been installed on Cirrus light aircraft, where they control fuel flow.
