P&W to Power Carrier-Based Drone Northrop Grumman has awarded Pratt & Whitney a $54 million contract to develop and integrate the engine and exhaust system for the U.S. Navy’s X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) air vehicle. The P&W F100-PW-220U engine will power the UCAS-D, providing up to 16,000 lb of thrust. Development of the UCAS-D prototype is proceeding in Palmdale, California, and construction of the aircraft’s fuselage center section and wing structure is virtually complete. “We’ve got it on its wheels, and the outer wing panels will go on in a couple of months,” said Gene Fraser, Northrop Grumman integrated systems vp, western region. First flight of the UCAS demonstrator is expected in November 2009, and sea trials are scheduled to begin before the end of 2011. These tests, which will seek to prove that a pilotless aircraft can be operated safely from an aircraft carrier, will cover deck operations, catapult takeoffs and arrested landings. Northrop Grumman is also coordinating with F-35 maker Lockheed Martin, looking ahead to a time when the X-47 and the Lightning II will together form the spear-point of U.S. carrier aviation. These efforts include the development of common support equipment and other space-saving measures. Still, the UCAS-D funding picture remains fluid, and the program’s future is by no means assured.
