FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Last Lynx Synthetic Aperture Radar Delivered General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (Hall 2, Stand A9) has delivered the eighth and final Systems Development and Demonstration Lynx II synthetic aperture radar to the U.S. Army for its Extended Range/ Multi-Purpose (ER/MP) unmanned air system program. Lynx II incorporates Sagem for a sleeker look–and more cockpit capability. a ground moving target indicator and will equip the ER/MP Sky Warrior UAS program. General Atomics is also producing an additional 33 Lynx II radars for delivery this year and in 2009. The first six of these units will be delivered in September to the Iraqi Air Force. Helos Modernize with Sagem’s Glass Cockpit The latest glass cockpit design from Sagem is being fielded with commercial and law enforcement helicopters as part of helicopter modernization activities, replacing older electro-mechanic instruments used for piloting and navigation functions with electronic displays. A “glass cockpit” displays much more information, enhances the crew situational awareness and improves flight safety and efficiency, while reducing pilot workload. In the past two years Sagem has worked intensively to certify its new design, the Integrated Cockpit Display System (ICDS), for use in Squirrel/Ecureuil; Bell 406, 407, UH1, 212; Robinson R44; Sikorsky S-61, S-64, BK117 and EC120. ICDS is composed of a set of electronic displays and software applications that modernize the cockpits of civil helicopters, general aviation and business aircraft. The system utilizes several flat displays sized 6-, 8- and 10-inch. ICDS is offered in different flavors and configurations, displaying images, text and video from sensors and mission systems. Typically, ICDS comprises a Primary Flight Display (PFD), Engine Monitoring System (EMS), Navigation Display (ND) and Multi-Function Displays (MFD). The system has already been implemented in several platforms, including 14 AS350 Squirrel helicopters, modernizing the helicopter fleet of the Los Angeles police department (LAPD) in California. It also operates on a Squirrel of the San Diego Police Department. Last year California’s Riverside County Sheriff’s Department selected ICDS glass cockpit displays for its entire fleet. The system was recently selected for EC-120 helicopters to be used for French army aviation pilot training. In pursuing opportunities to install ICDS on business jets, Sagem Avionics, Inc., established a partnership with General Dynamics Aviation Services (GDAS) to modernize cockpits of business jets, including the Gulfstream, Hawker, Challenger and Falcon. The company is also cooperating with EADS Socata and Embraer to introduce the system on Xingu trainers destined for the French navy.
