FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Going FAST to the Past Relatives of early aviation pioneers visited the Cody Exhibition here at the show, and are seen with FAST’s replica of his British Army Aeroplane No 1A. The centerpiece of the celebrations at Farnborough to commemorate the pioneering flight made here in 1908 by American Samuel Franklin Cody is a replica of his British Army Aeroplane No 1A built by volun- teer members of the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST). The plan to build the full-scale, non-flying replica was launched in January 2007 and has been supported by many aerospace companies and individuals who have contributed money, materials and skills to bring the $60,000 project to fruition. T eam leader David Wilson, who in former employment with the UK Ministry of Defence was responsible for the Eurofighter, has overseen a band of skilled volunteers who constructed the 52-ft wingspan replica according to plans provided by local Cody experts John and Jean Roberts. Every effort has been made to make the replica as true to the original as possible, using representative materials and even some original bamboo from Cody’s aircraft. Largely complete as displayed here in the Cody Exhibition within the “Pioneers of Flight Pavilion,” FAST team members will have the airplane finished in time for the centenary celebrations on October 16. On that day 100 years ago Cody and the British Army Aeroplane No 1A flew for a distance of 1,390 ft at a height of 30 ft to make the first powered, controlled flight by a heavier-than-air machine in Britain. This painting by French artist Paul Langelle of Cody’s pioneering flight on October 18, 1908 was discovered by members of the FAST team, but little is known of its history. Do you know more?
