Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 16, 2008 - (Page 8) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 Royal Air Maroc, Snecma Engineering Deal Downturn? What Downturn? “We’re seeing some softening, but we’re still growing,” said Cessna Aircraft chairman, president and CEO Jack Pelton. “Doubledigit growth has turned into single-digit growth. In the last couple of years, we saw a very overheated market. Now it’s simmered down to a more reasonable level. “Softness in the North American market is being propped up by what we’re seeing internationally. It’s growing and business aviation is being adapted in other regions of the world. Businesses are growing into new economic zones and regions. Jack Pelton. It’s not only good for their economies, but also for commerce and productivity. There are places people need to go that quite often aren’t served by other modes of transportation. “We’re selling Citations into Kazakhstan, Croatia, Serbia and Vietnam. Six now operate in Egypt. Once you get used to this kind of transportation, you’re not going to wake up five years from now and think you don’t need it. “I do believe business aviation will continue to prosper in many such countries. These people aren’t buying airplanes because their neighbors have Bentleys. It’s not a fad.” —Fred George Royal Air Maroc is strengthening its relationship with Snecma Services with the signing of an engineering support contract. The two companies are already partners in the jointly owned Snecma Morocco Engine Services, an MRO facility for CFM56-3 and -7B engines. GKN to Supply Complete Engine Modules By acquiring Teleflex Aerospace Manufacturing and continuing the growth of manufacturing capability in Mexicalli, Mexico, GKN Aerospace has allowed the company to offer aero-engine primes the capability to manufacture and supply complete, assembled jet engine fans, turbine exhaust or compressor case modules. GKN Aerospace’s revenue growth has been 20% per year for the past five years. “We believe aero-engine primes will prefer to work with a set of major suppliers who will take on responsibility for large sections, or modules, of each engine in their entirety,” said Marcus Bryson, CEO of GKN Aerospace. “The strategic increase in the scale and technological expertise of our engine-related operation ensures we are positioned to take on that role,” he said. GKN is at Chalet G1-3. Powervamp: Try Not Flying Without Us One of the unsung heroes of Farnborough is undoubtedly Powervamp, which won the engineering support contract for this year’s show. Based at Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset, the company is responsible for positioning all display aircraft—from the smallest piston single to the Airbus A380—while providing ground power and other services. “Without Powervamp GPUs and other support, the aircraft are simply hugely expensive alloy tubes,” says managing director Richard Roller. “They’re hot and dark with no avionics powered up.” Lee Continues to Innovate in Miniature Lee Company shares the year of its inception (1948) with the first Farnborough Air Show 60 years ago, and it is pursuing its original path of producing customized miniature fluid-handling products for a wide range of aerospace customers. For example, the company has sold 100 million of its Lee plugs, an early invention of founder Leighton Lee, Jr. The plug provides a way to solve the problem of sealing cross-drilled holes without the use of threads or O-rings. The product range has expanded to include restrictors, valves and safety screens, including Hi-Bar versions machined from solid bar stock that are able to withstand pressures up to 7,500 pounds per sq in. Recent additions include high flow solenoid valves. Lee Products Limited is in Hall 4, Stand F7. PAS Technologies’ Lean Transformation Since being acquired from Paxair, Inc., by Gridiron Capital LLC two years ago, PAS Technologies (Hall 3, Stand B8) has improved the firm’s efficiency by adopting a series of lean manufacturing techniques. On the carbon seal production line in Kansas City the changes made resulted in an 18-day turnaround time and a 98.5% on-time delivery record. Currently, the company delivers its products worldwide to its three main plants in the U.S., Ireland and Singapore. Dunlop Showcasing Boeing 737NG Tires Here Dunlop Aircraft Tyres (Hall 4, Stand E14) is showcasing a broad range of product, including new tires recently approved by Boeing for 737 Next Generation aircraft. They comprise two new main gear bias-ply (cross-ply) tires and a new radial-ply nosegear tire. With more than 2,500 Boeing 737NGs in service, and a backlog of over 2,000 on order, the new products will enable Dunlop to expand its share of the medium-haul market sector. "Our improved and expanded range of tires for B737NG aircraft will enable us to compete even harder in a market worth an estimated $50 million a year," said company chairman Ian Edmondson. 8 July 16, 2008 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
