Farnborough 2008 Show News - July 17, 2008 - (Page 21) FA R N B O R O U G H 2 0 0 8 ‘Industry, Give Us Help!’ That’s the plea of Mike MillerSmith, chairman of the British Disabled Flying Association, who’s here recruiting volunteers and talking up a world record attempt on September 6. BDFA promotes flying as a way of improving the lives of disabled persons and also offers a variety of services, mostly in education and general support, to the industry. The association is looking for flight instructors as well as structural engineers. The September 6 event is the “BDFA DHL 757 Tow”—60 disabled individuals in manual wheelchairs, furnished with special harnesses by AmSafe Bridport, will tow a DHL-furnished Boeing 757 along the main runway at Lasham Airfield here in Hampshire near Basingstoke. “ We a r e h o p i n g t h a t t h e crowds at this year’s Farnborough Air Show will lend their support in September,” Miller-Smith said. www.bdfa.net Cadets from at least five countries have trained in the ETPS Gripen. 10 Years Up for Gripen and ETPS It’s been 10 years since the UK’s famed Empire Test Pilot’s School started to fly the Gripen as part of its annual test pilot training syllabus. Since 1999 more than 90 instructors and students from all over the world have used the ETPS Gripen to learn its agile fly-by-wire handling and advanced systems fit. The current class of ETPS test pilot trainees includes personnel from the Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK. To mark the 10th anniversary, Saab brought the specially marked ETPS Gripen (known as the “painted lady”) to the UK for some special air-to-air photography. Last Sunday, on the eve of the Farnborough Air Show, Swedish air force Chief-of-Staff Gen. Anders Silwer presented a specially commissioned painting of the ETPS Gripen flying over Stonehenge to the School. The painting will be hung in perpetuity in the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly. —Robert Hewson British Disabled Flying Association chairman Mike Miller-Smith with group’s Scottish Aviation Bulldog, a former Jordanian Air Force trainer. Singapore Air Show: Book Your Stand Early site. Bookings are already at a level higher than anticipated, and all expectations are that the show will be larger than the February 2008 event. One change from this year’s show—and the reason that show organizers are suggesting early bookings—is that there will be n o temporary exhibition space constructed to supplement the permanent exhibition center at Changi. Exhibitors will be able build their own pavilions, however, as Lockheed Martin, Northrop, Gripen and others do at several shows, including here at Farnborough.
