Eurocopter’s EC175 Shares the Limelight Eurocopter has lifted the veil off a new 7-metric-ton medium twin helicopter intended to compete head to head with AgustaWestland's popular AW139. A full-scale mockup of the 16-passenger multirole EC175—being developed with Harbin Aviation, part of the China's Avic II group—was unveiled Sunday at Heli-Expo. Eurocopter said the design of the new model is now frozen, following a critical design review on Dec. 5, and the first prototype has entered production. The maiden flight is scheduled for 2009 and European certification in 2011. More than 40 equipment options will permit use of the helicopter for search and rescue (SAR), homeland security, emergency medical services, business and commercial aviation, and oil and gas applications. Engines will be two Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67E turboshafts with FADEC. The launch customers for the sixteen-passenger EC175 are Bristow Helicopters and VIH of Canada.
