Germany is pursuing a new concept of procurement and operational support with its plan to contract Lufthansa Technik as the single prime contractor for procurement, completion and technical support. Last year Germany’s Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) launched a competition to find a single-source supplier to handle the modernization of the Ministry of Defence’s special mission wing. Lufthansa Technik was selected as the “preferred supplier” about two weeks ago, the company announced. Negotiations are now underway to agree final terms for the procurement, fitting out and technical support of two Airbus A319 Corporate Jetliners and four Bombardier Global 5000s. The deal should be signed by the end of the year, according to Lufthansa Technik. The six new aircraft chosen by the BWB—described as “the medium-range fleet”—will replace Germany’s existing fleet of Challenger 601 jets starting in 2010. The two 48-seat A319s will be delivered in 2010 following their completion in Hamburg. Delivery of all four 12-seat Global 5000 jets is scheduled for 2011. Lufthansa Technik says it expects to provide an initially contracted term of 10 years inservice support. The Global 5000 jets will be outfitted at the Bombardier completion center in Montreal, Canada, and at Bombardier’s service center in Tucson, Ariz. Technical support for the Global 5000 jets is to be provided by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services in Berlin. For several years Lufthansa Technik has been responsible for the maintenance of Germany’s existing large Government VIP aircraft (A310s) and the Luftwaffe’s Airbus multi-role transport aircraft (MRTT). —Robert Hewson Jet Aviation will take 18 months to custom-complete a 787 interior.
