B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 Day 2 - (Page 20) N BA A 2007 ARI Reduces ATC Delays and Reroutes Have Plane, Will Campaign: Georgian’s Super Viking Allowed the Personal Touch When Sonny Perdue decided to run for governor of Georgia in 2002, he knew he would be up against a well-financed Democratic incumbent in a state that had not elected a Republican governor since Reconstruction. You can probably already tell that Perdue isn’t the sort of person who is easily deterred. A lifelong aviator, he is also the proud owner of a Bellanca Super Viking. This 1974 vintage plane is a low wing four-seaternot exactly the latest in general aviation technology. But he loves to Gov. Sonny Perdue. fly it. So while his opponent raised $25 million and went on television to visit with voters in Georgia, Perdue raised a paltry $3 million and got in his Super Viking to fly all over the state. For example, he was able to make calls to voters all day and take off from the Atlanta area around 5pm to make a dinner with a gathering of voters in South Georgia. Perdue won. And he told NBAA members at the opening session of the convention that the way he figures it, his Super Viking was worth $22 million to his 2002 campaign. General aviation—the great equalizer in a state-wide political campaign in the age dominated by television ads. You might not be surprised to learn that this governor is one who wants to make sure that no citizen in Georgia lives more than 30 minutes from a general aviation airport. He is having some runways extended. He was also really happy to have NBAA back in Atlanta since it is one of the top 10 trade shows in the U.S. “Welcome back. ya’ll,” says he. —David Hughes Air Routing International’s Domestic Flight Watch (DFW) program, celebrating its second year of service, is designed to reduce ATC delays and reroutes experienced by corporate and charter operators. The service incorporates a partnership between ARI meteorologists and flight planners, the NBAA’s general aviation desk and the FAA. “Our client aircraft are now treated by the FAA the same way the FAA treats the airlines when it comes to issuing delays and reroutes,” according to Air Routing vp Tim Maystrik. “Clients are finding that being informed in advance about potential delays is helping them make effective operational decisions. Everything down-line from ground transportation to important meetings as well as unnecessary stress on passengers is affected with actual or potential delays.” ARI is at Booth 1705 here. Cessna Places Academia’s First Mustang The University of North Dakota (UND) has ordered a Citation Mustang from Cessna—becoming the first flight school to do so. UND will use this entry level Citation jet for executive travel as well as flight training for students. Currently with a fleet of 120 diverse aircraft, the university’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences has offered aviation degrees for 40 years. On average, enrollment of flight student’s tops 1,000 and total flight training hours surpasses 100,000 each year. Airport Data Access With AC-U-KWIK AXIS AXIS allows users to integrate AC-U-KWIK’s premier airport data into their applications with the option of customizing both the selection of AC-U-KWIK data fields and the timing of the data updates. The web-based service provides access to the entire AC-U-KWIK database, including numerous FBO amenities, after-hours telephone numbers, email and web addresses and airport diagrams. Users can choose the timing of data updates and customize their data field selections. NTSB Joins Bombardier Safety Standdown Highest-ever attendance is predicted for the 11th Bombardier Safety Standdown in Wichita October 22-25, including the NTSB as an official event partner. Three lecture days will be accepting 500 free attendees this year—an increase of 50 delegates—and there will be even more aviation professionals. A keynote address by FAA associate administrator for aviation safety, Nick Sabatini, will be followed by the normal core subjects while new topics on the roster include Organizing for High Reliability and “the Role of Non-Verbal Communication on the Flight Deck.” ExcelAire Adds Three Gulfstreams Augmenting what is already the New York metropolitan area’s largest Gulfstream fleet, ExcelAire (Booth 405) has added three more of the marque to its private jet charter portfolio, it is announcing at the convention. The new aircraft, which join Global Express, Legacy, Hawker and Learjet types, are a spread of a 12-seat GIII; same capacity, but longer-range G450; and a GV with 16 places and ultra-long range. “Along with expanding our fleet, we now operate the only worldclass FBO on Long Island,” said David Rimmer, svp. Learn to Fly on Oahu, Hawaii There are many places a college student could learn how to fly an aircraft with the latest glass cockpits, but now one of them is at Honolulu Community College on Oahu. The college has engaged Galvin Flying Services of Boeing Field in Seattle to set up a collegiate flying training program with three Diamond DA40 aircraft and a twin diesel DA42 Twin Star—both equipped with Garmin G1000 all glass cockpits. These aircraft will operate from Kalaeloa Airport (KJRF) (the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station). Galvin Flying Service is at Booth 2552. 20 September 26, 2007 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
