B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 Day 2 - (Page 22) AVIONICS N BA A 2007 West Star Pursues AutoPower for Hawker 800 “I Was Right,” Says Heerdt, Whose Lufthansa Technik Is in Demand, Very Much So One of the first to express alarm about the completions crunch for large aircraft as sales outstrip the capacity of the finishing shops was Walter Heerdt, svp for marketing and sales at Lufthansa Technik, who raised the alarm at EBACE last May. Asked what has happened since then, he told Show News, “events have proven I was right!” Now that Airbus has booked the first order for a VVIP A380, the question becomes who will have the capacity to handle it. Airbus has sold seven VIP widebodies so far this year (five A340s, one A330 and the A380). Boeing is also selling well, with some eight 787s and four 747-8s. “Of course we could do the A380,” says Heerdt. “But it will take up two production lines for maybe two years. We could do a 747-8 and a 787 at the same time instead. One must ask which might be the better business case.” In addition, the completion center for the first A380 will have the eyes of the industry watching every step. “There is reputation at stake,” says Heerdt. The airplane must be perfect and, more importantly, finished on time—which can be challenging for a firsttime job when the learning Walter Heerdt. curve is steep. Lufthansa Technik is gearing up to meet the completions demand, opening a second widebody line in 2010, but it will not add any new buildings. “We don’t want to be caught with excess capacity if any downturn comes,” Heerdt said. —John Morris West Star Aviation, a Grand Junction, Colo.-based maintenance and service center and FBO, will undertake pursuit of an STC for Safe Flight’s AutoPower automatic throttle system on the Hawker 800 series. It is estimated that more than 800 of the aircraft were manufactured, and the first installation is expected to be out the door in about 12 months. Safe Flight (Booth 2239) is based in White Plains, N.Y. EASA OKs RVSM STC for 500 Series Citations JETTECH (Booth 1819), developer of RVSM aftermarket solutions for airframes not supported by a factory OEM engineered installation, has been awarded an STC by the European Aviation Safety Agency for Cessna Citation 500-series aircraft. The STC will bring the aircraft into RVSM compliance in order to operate between FL290 and FL410. Starting at $69,900, the JETTECH RVSM is the only STC-approved solution for Citation aircraft with pre-275 serial numbers equipped with the factory installed Bendix autopilots and Honeywell digital altimeters. Collins Offers STCs to Avionics Dealers Rockwell Collins is starting to make STCs it owns available to avionics dealers to lower operator installation costs and facilitate the retrofit of its avionics. The company has just made available an STC for Pro Line 21 Integrated Display Systems (IDS) on the Dassault Falcon 50. IDS can be installed to work with existing Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance Systems, T errain Awareness Warning Systems, as well as communications and flight management systems. Rockwell Collins also owns STCs for Pro Line 21 IDS on Piaggio P-180, Hawker 800A and is obtaining them for Hawker Beechcraft King Air 200 and C90s. Crane Proximity Sensors for Phenoms Crane Aerospace & Electronics (Booth 2523), has been selected by Embraer to provide landing gear and door proximity switches for the Phenom 100/300 family of executive jets, representing the first aircraft to incorporate Crane's technology in the light jet and very light jet categories. Greg Ward, president of Crane's Aerospace Group noted the significance of the contract, stating, “We are very pleased that the reliability advantages of our proximity sensing technology will be applied to Embraer's exciting new executive jet family. We are a long-standing preferred supplier of Embraer and are delighted to extend our partnership to the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300 programs.” Eaton to Supply Lighting Control for ARJ-21 Chinese-built ARJ-21 will be supplied with Eaton’s (Booth 4032) integrated cockpit overhead panel assembly and cockpit lighting controller subsystem. Eaton will also supply the multi-channel cockpit lighting controller as well as other toggles and buttons for the aircraft. The panels feature LED-illuminated pushbutton switches and edge-lit panels. The AVIC 1 Commercial Aircraft Co.- built regional jet has two variants; one is a 70-80-seat version, the other a 90-100-seat. First flight is scheduled for March 2008. Parker Flight Controls on Phenom 300 Parker Aerospace (Booth 6841) will supply the flight control system for the Phenom 300 business jet. The system is comprised of a combination fly-by-wire spoiler control and electromechanical pitch and trim, yaw and roll, and flap system. The systems will be coordinated by a centralized electronic controller, which Parker is also supplying. The Phenom 300 is an almost entirely different aircraft from its counterpart, the Phenom 100.
