B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 Day 2 - (Page 26) N BA A 2007 Airlift Northwest Upgrades With Eurocopter Russian Entrepreneurs Appear Quite Interested in the Comlux A318 Elite The Comlux A318 Elite—on show here for the first time—caused quite a stir last week when it appeared at Jet Expo in Moscow. “I have never seen so many exceptionally qualified visitors at a business aircraft show before,” said David Velupillai, product marketing manager at Airbus executive and private aviation. “As many as 10 business delegations of potential customers visited the aircraft, even though it was one and David Velupillai. one-half hours away from the [indoor] exhibition, and they were literally shopping for their next aircraft. Who were they? Even Velupillai isn’t sure. “Some wouldn’t even say who they were. They asked one of their delegation to hand over the business card.” They were businessmen, he did know, mostly entrepreneurs from many different industries. The business aviation market in Russia is fairly hopping, and demand shows no sign of diminishing in the future. Velupillai said research shows there were 70 top-line business jets in Russia in 2000, including aircraft such as the Yak-42 trijet. This year there are 145 top business aircraft there. “This suggests a steady market of about 10 aircraft a year,” he said. That’s not to be sneezed at when one considers the A318 Elite is priced around $50 million completed, and the ACJ at $50 million green (it will take another $15-20 million to finish it.) And an A380? The airline list price is about $320 million. —John Morris Airlift Northwest has ordered four Eurocopter EC 145 helicopters to expand its mission capability and upgrade the fleet, which provides air medical service for one of the largest and most geographically varied service areas in the world—from southeast Alaska to coastal villages in western and central Washington. Responding from one of seven bases located throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, Airlift Northwest has cared for more than 55,000 patients and logged more than 250,000 takeoffs and landings since it was founded in 1982. as Hermann Life Flight Gets First EC 145 During a ceremony at last week’s Air Medical Transport Conference in Tampa, American Eurocopter delivered the first of six EC 145 helicopters to Houston-based Memorial Hermann Life Flight. The company is a long-time operator of Eurocopter helos. In 1976 it started the second air medical program in the U.S. with an SA319B Alouette. For Memorial Hermann Life Flight's operations, the EC 145s will be configured to accommodate special mission equipment and medical personnel for neonatal transports and intra-aortic balloon pump patients. ARI Introduces Datalink Service Air Routing International (Booth 1705) has introduced its own datalink service, powered by Satcom Direct’s FlightDeck Freedom program. ARI customers will now be able to retrieve Air Routing flight information and message content, which includes pre-departure clearances, digital ATIS, text weather, flight plans, oceanic departure clearances, flight tracking and text message delivery. The service will utilize VHF, Inmarsat and Iridium data networks to support Honeywell AFIS, Rockwell Collins RIU/CMU-4000, Teledyne Controls Telelink, and Universal Avionics Unilink. Autothrottle on for Falcon 50s, CitationJets Premier Aircraft (Booth 7039) and Safe Flight Instrument (Booth 2239) have signed an agreement to certify Safe Flight’s AutoPower auto throttle systems on Falcon 50s and CitationJets. The AutoPower system provides accurate airspeed control, precise engine target setting, increased situational awareness, reduced crew workload, greater passenger comfort, quieter cabin environment, and increased payload/range. In addition to the proven benefits of the AutoPower System on two-pilot aircraft, Premier and Safe Flight are confident that the system will bolster safety by reducing the crew workload during the most critical phases of flight for the single pilot operators of the CitationJet series. Jormac Bins for Boeings Clearwater, Florida-based Jormac Aerospace (Booth C301) has developed an advanced overhead bin/liner system for Boeing 727, 737 and 757 singleaisle aircraft to better address the completion requirements for these popular VIP airplanes. As an upgraded replacement for the standard Boeing bin/liner, Jormac’s system combines 28% oversized bins able to accommodate wheel-first stowage of most carry-on size bags; interior LED lighting when the bin is opened; and advanced acoustic technology. Additionally, clients can work with Jormac engineering to modify certain features of the bins to create their own signature look and design. First delivery is expected by the end of the year. Gore Wins African Head of State Contract Gore Design Completions (Booth 4050) has signed its first contract for a head-of-state aircraft for an African nation. The Airbus A340, which is scheduled to arrive at Gore’s San Antonio facility in June 2008, will be outfitted in “classy contemporary styling” and will feature a forward VIP section with bathroom, bedroom, office and conference room, VIP galley complex, and VIP, first class, guest and staff seating sections. “It’s our first head of state aircraft for an African nation and our first widebody Airbus, and we are very excited,” says GDC president Kathy Gore. 26 September 26, 2007 www.aviationweek.com/shownews
