Fifteen engineering students have been selected and the scheme is backed by Farnborough College of Technology. All youngsters come from the local area and attended local schools. The college reports it was totally over-subscribed for this four-year course where students will study fixed and rotary wing aircraft engineering. The first year will be spent at college, followed by three years of practical experience with students rotated around the companies. All three companies have bases on the Surrey/ Hampshire borders. —Mike Vines The MS760x Paris Jet VLJ on show here. For those wanting a taste of what it could be like to own a very light jet (VLJ), Ontariobased JetSet (Booth 5939) is offering introductory training flights. The company is offering a two-day training course on November 25-26. For $2,498, participants will get 10 hours of ground school and a one-hour flight. This introductory training also gives pilots glass cockpit procedure, ground operations and take-offs and landings. For piston pilots wanting to make their break into the fast lane, JetSet has a turbo jet introduction included in the program. If pilots still haven’t had their appetites satiated after the included one-hour flight in a MS760x Paris Jet, the training materials can be used for continuing their type rating. Once JetSet has pilots hooked on flying jets, they offer a shared ownership program. This program allows pilots to buy into as little as one-sixteenth of a Paris Jet for $60,000. The four-seat Paris Jet can cruise at 400 mph at 20,000 ft. It has a range of 1,330 miles. The Paris Jet was the first dedicated business jet—the first prototype flying in 1954— Show New’s Mike Jerram reported at Le Bourget in 2005. The aircraft was originally designed as a two-seat trainer for the French government, but when the contract was lost, two more seats were added and it was sold as a business jet. JetSet currently has four Paris Jets in its stable and a fifth VLJ will be added in November. Another 17 aircraft are on order, so there will be no shortage of aircraft for those vying for a bit of the VLJ action. —Evan Sweetman 64 First UK Aviation Skills Academy Directions Aviation Academy, a UK first, has opened its doors and aims to attract people into the industry. It operates from a 55,000-sq-ft hangar at Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster. The hangar contains a complete Boeing 727-200 fuselage with a large VIP interior at the rear for specialist corporate aviation cabin crew training. Trainee aero engineers get the chance to work on nonflying aircraft, and in May next year Marshall Aerospace is opening an MRO in the hangar to further inspire students.
