B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 Day 2 - (Page 66) N B A A 2 0 07 World Watch Intelligence Upgrade ASI International and NBAA are sharing the simultaneous launch of ASI Group’s (Booth 1705) release of its World Watch Version 6 intelligence database. The system provides real-time analysis of information from countries and major cities for directors of travel and flight departments, among other customers. The World Watch Database allows users to quickly access a wealth of information, including in-depth risk forecasting, threat levels, essential travel and cultural data and country and city profiles. This new version allows users to access ASI’s partnership with Air Routing International to garner general information about airports and weather. “We’ve reorganized our content to offer more critical information right up front,” senior manager of intelligence division Matt Burdette said. Other features of the system allow users to locate major events with greater ease and search a database of events dating back to 1997. Users will also be able to assemble personalized intelligence briefs. The release of Version 6 coincides with the 10th anniversary of the program. It was developed with the help of long-time users of the database to better suit their needs. In other news from ASI, the company has appointed Charlie LeBlanc as its president. He joined ASI in 1993 and in 2000 became vice president of operations. The company will be stepping up its vetting process. The work done over the past year to optimize the process requires that ASI vendors adhere to a strict set of operating procedures, followed by audits. At its NBAA booth, ASI will also be giving away the latest update of its World Threat Map. The wall map highlights threat levels of countries and of more than 150 cities throughout the world by color-coding. Travelers has secured a contract with ASI Group subsidiary ASI Global to provide crisis management support for kidnap and ransom policy holders. ASI Global will provide the professional advice as a feature to Travelers kidnapping and ransom insurance program. —Evan Sweetman The BBJ has been the test platform EMS SatCom Claims First Inmarsat SwiftBroadband Nod Inmarsat has blessed the eNfusion HSD-400 high-speed data terminal from EMS SatCom (Booth 5211) of Ottawa, Ontario for use with the new SwiftBroadband network. EMS says its terminal is the first commercial product to gain such an approval. The terminal may be familiar to users, as it has been in the fleet since June 2005 and operating on the lower speed Inmarsat Swift64 network. A simple software upgrade makes the box suitable for the higher speed services, which also provide a more cost-effective connection on a single channel, the company says. The Inmarsat connection allows simultaneous communications in multiple modes and manages email, Internet, voice and videoconference. EMS SatCom says the HSD-400 terminal is capable of cost-effective background-class services, in which it is simply left on, for Internet and email traffic that can be burst-transmitted, with the customer paying by the megabit rather than by the minute. It also can manage streaming class services for real-time applications, such as voice or video, at a guaranteed rate of 32 to 224 kilobits per second. The system has been in test operation on a Boeing Business Jet operated by a Fortune 100 company for some 400 hours, according to EMS SatCom. When operated in conjunction with the company’s latest routers, passengers can connect wirelessly using any WiFi device. DAE’s Got Its Ducks in a Row, Buys TSS for Repair Capability The food chain of the aerospace industry is rarely this apparent: TSS Aviation, a component repair facility and OEM for engine part repair, has been purchased by Standard Aero, which has recently been purchased by Dubai Aerospace Enterprise. Standard Aero (Booth 5365), which DAE bought along with Landmark Aviation and Landmark’s Associated Air Center completions operation, is still focusing on MROs—even though the Landmark FBO chain is not staying with DAE. “We can now do our own component repair,” Standard Aero president Paul Soubry said. As TSS’s specialty is in engine component repair this purchase coincides with Standard Aero receiving authorization to work on Pratt & Whitney PW610/615. This family of engines is common on business jets. Established in 1948, TSS Aviation was a branch of family owned and operated TSS Technologies. The Cincinnati-based company is a full service component overhaul facility for several different engines. Standard Aero’s purchase of TSS Aviation is valued at $65 million. Right in the thick of things at DAE. “When we visited the facility, we found they had the same idea of operating condition standards,” Soubry said. As part of this new authorization, Standard Aero will be expanding their Maryville, T.N. facility. The 10,000-sq. ft. expansion will have a new test cell facility and access to existing facilities. Standard Aero plans to begin offering service for the PW610/615 engines at the Maryville facility in 2008. “The Maryville facility will give us better access to the VLJ and Air Taxi services,” Soubry said. —ES for EMS SatCom’s HSD-400 terminal. 66 September 26, 2007 www.aviationweek.com/shownews http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews
