N B A A 2 0 07 CMC Electronics Rides Bizjet Wave With the growing popularity of its Class 2 electronic flight bag and SureSight FLIR sensors, CMC Electronics is finding that business jet avionics accounts for about a third of its commercial sales these days, up from just 10% in 2005. The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Esterline Corp., also markets avionics and integrated systems into military and airline aircraft and it still has about a 50-50% mix in business split between civil and military. But the growth in the business jet market is the key to where the company is going, says Bruce Bailey, CMC’s vp, commercial aviation. For example, the PilotView Class 2 EFB got its start as a retrofit system with supplemental type certificates (STCs). And while there are STCs now for 15 models of business jets, the product SureSight EVS. is also being installed in new production aircraft ATR has just selected PilotView as an option for the new and in-service ATR-42 and ATR-72 aircraft. In similar fashion, the CMC SureSight line of FLIR sensors, which include a cooled camera and a less expensive uncooled system, have gained a lot of traction. The cooled I-Series is 50 to 100 times more sensitive than the uncooled M-Series model. These sensors were launched in 2001 and now they are being installed in new production aircraft at Bombardier, Dassault, Pilatus and in systems developed by Universal Avionics. CMC is launching an improved version of its certified, second generation SureSight CMA-2600 I-Series to enhance image processing within existing software as well as improvements in optics and wave band filtering. The improved unit, the CMA-2600i, has been selected by Rockwell Collins for use in the just launched Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) program for the Challenger 605. CMC also says it is developing a third-generation I-Series sensor, the CMA-2700, with improved digital signal processing and a high resolution 640 x 512 pixel focal plane array sensor. The CMA-2700 has been selected by Rockwell Collins for use on the Bombardier Global Vision flight deck on the Global 5000 and Global Express XRS. These aircraft will be the first equipped with Rockwell Collins’ new line of Pro Line Fusion avionics. —David Hughes CMC Assists In WAAS for FAA CMC’s electronic flight bag in an ATR cockpit. at Dassault, Gulfstream, Bombardier, Embraer, Pilatus, Sino Swearingen and ATR. Here at NBAA, CMC says Rockwell Collins has selected PilotView for the Global 5000 and Global Express XRS ultralong range business jets. The PilotView will enable paperless cockpit operations while displaying electronic charts, graphical weather as well as aircraft and operator manuals. CMC officials say that Pentastar Aviation has received an STC to install PilotView EFBs on the Falcon 50, Falcon 900 and Falcon 900EX as well as the LearJet 45 series of aircraft. Certifying Class 2 EFBs for airport moving maps and “own ship position” is being allowed for the first time by the FAA under a new advisory circular. Until recently, only Class 3 EFBs were permitted to use this capability. 70 CMC Electronics has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to install and certify Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) avionics for the FAA’s Bombardier Global 5000 jet. CMC has joined with Honeywell International and Bombardier Aerospace for this program. The three firms expect to complete development in 2008. CMC will produce the WAAS receiver. Honeywell will integrate and update the flight deck for the WAAS enhancements.Bombardier will integrate the entire avionics and produce the factory service bulletin. The new system will give the FAA the capability to demonstrate, flight test, and prove WAAS capability for all phases of flight, from take-off to touch down. CMC, Honeywell, and Bombardier plan to offer WAAS avionics to their customers. WAAS augments GPS to provide an extremely accurate navigation solution that supports all flight operations from en route through Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and WAAS LPV CAT-I equivalent approach.
