N B A A 2 0 07 FlightDeck Freedom from Satcom Direct The company that made phone calls from the cabin via satellite simpler with its Global One Number access via a single phone number, has launched a new service to do the same for the cockpit. FlightDeck Freedom will link flight crews to their trip planners such as Universal Weather, Air Routing International and Skyplan for such services as clearances, digital ATIS, weather, flight plans and tracking and text messages. Satcom Direct also emphasizes that the service is platform neutral; that is, the link may be provided by SITA, Inmarsat, Iridium or AirCell, and Satcom Direct will configure a network for it. The service will be sold by the trip planners as part of their offering to customers, and included in the package will be flight tracking through a recent agreement with Flight Explorer. Pending is an agreement with Jeppesen for EFB content. Tracking will be accessible through the web using the company’s Plane Simple web page; browse , then look for the log-in link in the lower right corner. Howard Lewis, vp sales and marketing, announced that the first 90 tail numbers to sign up will get 90 minutes of free air time from the partnering satellite services. Sign up with a provider, not with Satcom Direct, which markets direct only to fleet sales of 20 or more aircraft. Grant Funds Student’s NextGen ATC Research The winner of the first Lindbergh-Lycoming grant in 2006 has been researching the use of cockpit control systems during Continuous Descent Approaches. Lesley Weitz is using the Lindbergh-Lycoming grant to help lay the groundwork for her PhD dissertation at Texas A & M University. Lycoming Engines (a division of Avco Corp) in Williamsport, Pa., teamed up with the Lindbergh Foundation, a charitable organization, to start the grants program. Weitz says the award has permitted her the freedom to investigate some of the key issues in the NextGen ATC system being designed by the FAA, NASA, the Defense Department and other federal agencies. She is now applying for future funding for this work. CDAs are seen by many Air Traffic Management experts as a key benefit of ATC modernization in the U.S., Europe and Asia because they may allow many aircraft to descend continuously from cruise altitude to the runway. This can save fuel burn, reduce noise effects on populated areas and curb greenhouse gas emissions by allowing pilots to use idle power at least until they configure the airplane for landing, adding drag. Her research focused on the use of cockpit control systems to automatically space aircraft on approach to the runway. Her areas of interest include: fixed time spacing between aircraft rather than fixed distance spacing, analytical development of a time-to-go metric measuring time to touchdown, and the effects of delays on the stability of spacingcontrol algorithms. Currently she is analyzing the ways to quantify the maximum allowable delays in an arrival stream before the system becomes unstable. She is sharing her results with scientists at the NASA Langley Research Center to support ongoing NextGen ATC efforts. Raisbeck has now performed 50 ZR LITE installations on Learjet 31A jets. 50 Learjets for Raisbeck’s ZR LITE Since FAA Approval in March 2007 Last month Raisbeck completed its 50th ZR LITE installation on a Learjet 31A. In March 2007, the FAA approved the ZR LITE Performance System for the Learjet 31. Since then, Raisbeck’s performance claims have been backed up by the responses from operators. The Learjet 31 with the 50th installation is operated by Kirkland Construction in Pueblo, Colo. Raisbeck’s customer, MM Air, uses that aircraft for approximately 150-200 of flight hours per year on corporate use. Company representative John Neumeister says MM Air purchased the ZR LITE system and Aft Fuselage Locker for “extra baggage space and increased range.” The first-ever installation of ZR LITE on a Learjet 35/36 series was made in June 2005. Now Raisbeck hopes to reach its 60th sale for all Learjet models early next month. Raisbeck sales manager for Learjet Performance Systems Nick Nicholson is confident this goal will be reached. “The ZR LITE performance system has become so popular that we can hardly keep them in stock.
